Class of 2020 Admission Portals Open?

When the portals open are they then having links to print whatever form she needs to fill out or have filled out? She is dual enrolled in HS and College. He summer semester ends next week and she is trying to have one of her professors fill out the needed English teachers evaluation (she has taken only College English for her Sophomore and Junior year).

There will be forms for her to fill out on-line and paperwork to submit. Each step in the process should be described in detail on-line. If she has any questions during the process, she will be notified of her USAFA Admissions Counselor, and she can send an email for further directions if something is unclear. My son needed to clarification when he applied and emailed his adviser who got back to him.

^^
Lol my question is for anyone who had theirs open!:)
There are items to complete online and forms to print and hand to teachers with instructions on how they can go online and complete a referral. Hope it helps!

It will but there is no link for the recommendation letter. She needs to speak to the professor and get a letter. She should also make sure that he does one for the academy and 3 more for his MOC.

I'm in the same boat, I've gone to strictly college since my junior year in high school. So now I'm trying to track down my professors from a few semesters ago

My DDs portal opened this morning. Yes, there are links and instructions for everything that is required. There is also a specific deadline exactly 4 months from today. Giddy-up! :wiggle:

When did your DD register? Then we kind of know where they are in opening the portals.

I was moved to candidate status this past week, and my portal says my application deadline is Nov 8. Are the staggered deadlines new this year? I was a little disappointed to see I didn't have until Jan 31 like I was planning. Does that mean we can't update our ACT/CFA scores past that date?

Foreigner, yes, the deadlines are different this year. All the information about the changes are on your portal. As far as I know, you can update your ACT/SAT as many times as you take it all the way up to January 31. All of that information is in your candidate kit. I suggest you print that out and read it over. Everything is explained in fine detail. As far as the CFA, you can only submit your scores one time and that's it. You can take your CFA unofficially as many times as you think you need, but whoever administers the test to you "officially" will submit your scores and then it is locked. You will only be able to submit new scores if USAFA asks you to. My DD is going to start taking her CFA on her own, shooting for at least every 2 weeks and when she feels she is ready, she will take it officially. She only has until November 10th to take it and then that's it. My suggestion is if you haven't started training yet, start now. Good luck to you.

It will be interesting to see if there will be a mass mailing March this year. If there is a limited time to finish your package and you add in that most MoCs have deadlines between Sept and mid Oct. Than all of the candidates on the slates should theoretically be in by end of Jan.

I may be wrong, but that is what it appears to me if I am reading this correctly.

Sounds good, thank you! The candidate kit hasn't been released yet (last I checked this morning), and the announcement left me a little confused because it doesn't mention anything about updating scores past Nov 8, unless I missed it. The portal says the kit should be released in the next few days, so I emailed my ALO and am hoping to get clarification on that!

I've been able to practice a couple times, but am still trying to improve those pull-ups. It's a shame we have less time, but at least it's the week after most fall sports have their State championships. I'm a Cross Country runner, so I don't plan on submitting any official scores I get prior to October.

Good luck to your daughter as well! I wish the best to both of you in this upcoming roller coaster of a year.

Foreigner, read page 6 of your Instructions to Candidates regarding the submission of SAT/ACT tests. It states, "Test results received by January 31st will be used to update your admissions file." They encourage you to take it as many times as necessary and keep sending in your new scores and then your portal will be updated.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you are looking for letters of recommendation before you have access to information on the portal

1) When asking for letters of recommendation, keep in mind that MOCs and academies may require the letters of recommendation to be in a sealed envelope with their signature across the seal on the back. This was my son's experience as he had to get some written and sent in via snail mail.

2) Sometimes the letters of recommendation have a question for the writers to address, such as why is this a good candidate for an academy or something of that nature. Thus, it may not be a good idea to get a letter written until after you have access to the portal directions.

3) It is a good idea get summer contact information as you may not have the specifics until then. Most people who are willing to write letters of recommendation are usually willing to give you summer contact information.

Good luck!

I applied to SS in early December, and my portal opened on July 1st, if that provides any insight

-Note that you will only be promoted to candidate status if you meet the basic guidelines to be eligible for one of the Academy's programs--Prep, Falcon, or Direct entry. If you don't meet guidelines you should have already received a letter letting you know something needs improvement. In most cases you need to retest (ACT or SAT) and then submit your new scores.

If you need to improve and will not be promoted to candidate status at this time, your letter will have the following verbiage:

"We have received your online application and are pleased by your desire to pursue a career as an Air Force Officer. As you probably know, the competition to receive an Air Force Academy appointment is keen and right now your overall academic record is not competitive. Please refer to your Instructions to Precandidate booklet or our catalog for an explanation of admissions factors and average scores. Don't be discouraged by this initial review of your record. We encourage you to provide us with updated SAT and/or ACT scores along with a high school (and college, if applicable) transcript and profile. You should pursue your nomination regardless of your present status. Nomination deadlines vary. Some congressional deadlines are as early as the 1st of October.

Due to the volume of applications we receive, we will only contact you when you become competitive in all the areas we use to evaluate applications. Should you have additional admissions questions, please consult our catalog which is available on the internet at http://www.academyadmissions.com or call your counselor, Zzz Zzzzz, Telephone: 1-800-443-9266. You can check your status online at: https://admissions.usafa.edu/gateway/gateway.aspx."

If you are going to be promoted to candidate status, then your letter has the following verbiage:

"Congratulations! Your application to the Air Force Academy indicates you have the potential for admission. We'll be sending you additional instructions in July. In the meantime, here are some things to do to make yourself as competitive as possible....."

Be patient if you received this letter, you will be promoted.

My DD has not received either of these letters...Not by snail mail, portal or email. When would she have received it, and how?

I definitely missed that. Thanks for your help!

I know you are in the know, and I am curious about how they have re-tweaked the system this year where they have not given them a drop dead date once they become a candidate.
~ I think my question has been lost in the mix.

Many have said that they are given 4 months to submit their entire package. If an MOC has a cut off date 10/1, than theoretically wouldn't the charging be much earlier than Mass Mailing March?
~ If all of the MoC applicants are considered Candidate by 9/15, would it be incorrect to assume than their USAFA date is 1/15, not end of Feb to update?

I am just trying to comprehend how the new tweaking works when it comes to charging. I see it right now as the majority of MOC charges (535) will drop no later than the 1st week of Feb. (their drop date for slate still being 1/31).
~ Assuming 4 months to submit once a candidate. MOC has drop date 10/1 for nominations.

That than means all that is left is the pool from an appointment perspective. I would assume, and we know what that word means, is that many more candidates this year could expect an answer come sometime Feb., not March.

Just trying to understand how this tweaking impacts the finesse from the appointment aspect. Are they still going to wait until the end of Feb. before they close the candidates package?

My DD is re-applicant and she received a letter on July 10 that explains the new process of reviewing applications. Her portal says "pending review". Re-applicants' portals opened on July 1.
