My son recently got accepted to USAFA summer Seminar, comes back a day and go's to boys state. My son also filled out the pre-candidate questionnaire; on his portal it says
Your Status:
Applicant* (your application is under consideration)
Your Application is:
Competitive
My question is; Is this the proper time to contact his ALO and what is his next move?

I contacted my ALO really early on just to introduce myself and let him know that I would be contacting him many more times. Eventually, those discussions will lead to setting an interview date, which is part of the main application. Has your DS received the main application on his portal?

Yes, I would say now is a great time to contact. Even if you can't do the interview or anything yet, you can still introduce yourself (or in your case, you DS can introduce himself)!

Thank you for your prompt reply. nothing as of yet just "competitive applicant" as stated above. Any idea, if and when his status will change to "candidate" and when does he receive his main application?

I believe I got candidacy sometime in May and when that happened they said they'd said additional info in July I and I think that's when my portal application opened up. I would just focus on things you can control at the moment like fitness and testing, to ease your mind of the wait and sign up for a good senior year for your DS

My DD also contacted her ALO early on, but keep in my that you may not hear back until after your ALO is finished with this year's appointees. None the less, it's always good to show enthusiasm and interest. :)

My recommendation during this time while you are still waiting on a "To Do" list from USAFA is to start working on backups if possible. I would say make a list of which colleges your DS will be applying to, list the steps he will have to do, and deadlines. Also have him work on his nominations. I know last year, when I was finally able to work on USAFA paperwork, everything came up at once, and I was suddenly juggling finals, paperwork for USAFA, applications to other colleges, and my nominations interviews! Try to avoid this if possible by doing as much as you can now, even if it is just organizing a schedule and listing deadlines.

When contacting our ALO for the first time, is a simple greeting and introduction enough? Or should we only contact he or she when we have a legitimate question? I don't want to start the process on the wrong foot..

When I first contacted my ALO, I was a Sophomore, and I introduced myself and gave him sort of a "resume" telling him what activities I was involved in and such. He suggested we meet in person, and when we did he knew about a lot of the stuff I was involved in and we could discuss the specifics a little more, and I personally found that to be helpful.

Thank you that helps a lot!

I completely second what Bailey has said. My first time I applied I thought I'd be fine between getting the application and the nom files done, but all that came in the middle of the fall sport season. Then it was mass chaos and late nights with that, homework and working on the plan Bs as well. Good luck!

Yup, very similar to my experience! Thank the good Lord my Dad was there to do damage control when I was on the verge of burnout! Don't let that be you if possible!
