I have several questions concerning Club/Intramural sports at West Point. If you have anything to add concerning my inquiries, please respond to this post. Thank you very much.

1) If I participate in a Club Sport...will it occur year-round usually? If yes, am I correct in saying I don't have to do any other (intramural) sports during the year?

2) I am interested in doing some sort of martial arts as my Club sport. The options that looked appealing were Judo, Karate, and Martial Arts. I am assuming we "try out" for these club sports during the summer before plebe year. Although I have limited experience in martial arts, I feel my body is built for this kind of movement (I am flexible, good reflexes etc.). Is it going to be really difficult for me to make the squad in one of the three options I named above? I'd be interested in doing the sport more for exercise and fun rather than trying to get some sort of collegiate title. Will I be able to participate in a club sport with that mindset or is it cut-throat year round with the club sports (especially Judo, Karate, and Martial Arts)?

3) Mountaineering also interests me, but I know I would not make the team if I tried out this summer. I figure I could practice a bit on the wall at West Point's gym and try out at a later date if I really wanted. Is the earliest I could try out at the beginning of sophomore year or end of freshman year? I don't know if they hold try outs at the beginning of semesters.

4) Judo vs. Karate vs. Martial Arts...does anyone have any insight? I'm looking for any info on which sport travels a lot, which is more popular, which is more recreational or really competitive etc. Any information on these or any other worthwhile club sports (that you don't need a lot of experience to participate in) is appreciated.

THANK YOU very much. GO ARMY BEAT NAVY.

Also, if anyone knows, what style of Karate does the Karate team do?

I can't answer any of your more specific questions, but I did learn some general information by talking to current cadets at a West Point Parents Club send-off yesterday. During the first or second week of school, there will be two "club days" -- one for competitive clubs/sports (other than the "core" sports) such as the triathlon team and the like. If I remember correctly from what they said, they'll have try-outs then. On the second "club day" there will be non-competitive clubs such as the ski club.

I would recommend looking at the west point website to find the clubs and the coaches, and try contacting the different coaches o express your interest.

EDIT: I searched some, and found that this site has more up-to-date information on club sports than anything linked on the official West Point page. It also features a list of all the clubs at WP, competitive or not, with links to their individual websites (which may or may not be up-to-date themselves).

It will depend on the sport/activity/club. Some receive exemptions from intramurals and have daily practices (rugby, team handball, etc.) and some do not (e.g. paintball).
