I think his mom would go crazy not seeing him for a year. It is her only child.I really thought they would be at home every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and summer break.

For the AFA they will be home, but remember they will owe 5 yrs ADAF, and when it comes to holidays, I wouldn't bank on them making it back for every holiday, birthday or special occasion.

I spent more Xmas's with my AF family than I did with my own family. Bullet and I were lucky, our families are from the same area. Our DS's fiance's family lives in NC, we live in VA. We already know that between the AF (where they are based), her family and ours, we will be happy to see them 1x every 2-3 yrs for Xmas.
~ Than again, we were AF, and out of 21 yrs ADAF, we made it home 6 times over the course of his career.

As far as our DS, it is an incredibly long story, but in the end he chose to remove his name after receiving his AFROTC scholarship. He had 4 noms (Pres., and 3 MOCS....I don't count the VP as a nom, but he applied for that too, so if you count it as a nom he had 5).
Our DS looked at the AFA curriculum, and the real life at the AFA as a cadet.
~~ Again, why this is not just about being on the path, but as they mature to make sure the ADA is a good fit.

The scholarship allowed him to attend a college in a scholars program where he was guaranteed an internship on the Hill or at the UN. Between the scholarship and his merit money, cost was really not an issue.

He was an AF brat, attended 8 public schools, 2 pre-schools, 5 states, 6 school districts. His entire life was dependent child of X rank Bullet. He wanted to have for once in his life to enjoy life where the AF wasn't his life 24/7 knowing that he wanted to make the AF a career.
~ So please don't use my child as a model of anything, his life was unique.

After all I have read I will not be pushing him toward the AFA.
I hope it wasn't due to us. Can I ask was it us, or was it the idea that he will go ADAF and the reality of the 5 yrs after the AFA is not something that is palatable as a family? Stationed in Fairbanks, Ak;, Mildenhall, UK; Ramstein, Germany where they just can't fly home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Afterall, you did say his Mom would not like the idea of not having him every Thanksgiving, Christmas.

I think he's saying he's not going to push his DS to go to AFA. It's not that he wouldn't want him to attend, but he wants to make sure it's his son's decision.

After reading everything here, and private messages people have sent me I will not mention the AFA to him. He will have to pursue the AFA on his own if that is the direction he wants to go. I was doing my research early because I know my son; he does not talk just to be talking. He has big dreams, telling me he will be a leader of this country one day. lol

I really think he should be able to get into any school he desires with his abilities. He is a special kid. He gives everything he goes after 100%. His math teacher told me last week that she wants her son to grow up just like Derek, my son:) I was so happy.

I think everyone for all the great info.

You describe most of the

young people on this Forum, if their parents would be describing them. Let him alone, if he's all that and the bag of chips you describe, he won't need you to run interference for him. Relax, take up golf, he'll handle it all one way or another. Thank you for stopping by our little part of the world.
