Coast Guard C-130, Marine Corps Cobra Collide In Midair Off San Diego

In my limited expedience, ATC's are not young or inexperienced. They are Officers with Long Range Radar Control and/or ATC experience. Going from VFR into or operating totally in IFR areas sometimes creates problems. Pilots may rely too much on the instruments and not look out the "window". Not saying the ATC should not have recognized the proximity of the aircraft.

"Jocks" used to love VFR until they went BINGO and then they needed a VECTOR from the CONTROLLER to the nearest orbiting KC-135 for a long drink to get home. The guys on the ground are professionals also and they feel the pain as much as anyone else.

It might be important to remind all that CG-1705 was engaged in a SAR case.

Also, for anyone on FaceBook, there is a group for the crew of CG-1705....

"Tribute to the Crew of U.S. Coast Guard Rescue 1705." It's open to the public. It's also a pretty clear indication of how close of a family the Coast Guard is.

Just to clarify:

ATC are not officers in the military: they are enlisted. The only officers involved in ATC are likely working for the Ops department. ATC experience in the military can range from civilians with many years to a brand new A school graduate who can barely remember relative directions when doing an approach.

Some are great, some aren't so hot: just like in every other profession in the world.

Sorry. The brain gets fuzzy after all these years. ATC are enlisted. I was thinking TAC (Tactical Air Control) long range and out beyond field control. Our guys were all officers doing flight follow and control, strike form ups, MIG CAP, BUFFS and tanker hook-ups.:hammer: I pray for their families.

The C-130/Helicopter collision, and the recent loss of the 2 USN pilots off Texas, should serve as a reminder that every day we ask our men and women in the US military to do dangerous things.

We sometimes forget that, believing that the real threat faced by the military only comes when they are dispatched overseas to fight America's wars.

Not true.

Not all of the losses this nation suffers to protect itself happen far away in combat zones.

These losses are no less tragic.
