Unfortunately, I received the dreaded TWE today. It will take some time and consideration to truly decide on reapplying or not, but my gut tells me to go for it. My question is, because I've heard that college applicants are looked at later, does that mean it is not possible to receive a LOA?

No, a college (re)applicant can receive a LOA. It happened to my friend. He is now appointed.

Not sure if the procedure is the same for all service academies, but I received an LOA from AFA. Even though I didn't get an LOA from WP or USNA, I heard back from both in late January/early Feb. So it may not be as late as you think it is!

Whether or not you receive a LOA, the more important aspect of being a college reapplicant is to have outstanding grades in your college courses and to get your SATs and ACTs as high as you can. I think most reapplicants are not really looking or expecting a LOA, although it would be nice, but just trying to be as competitive a candidate as possible. Of course all the other components such as getting a nom, doing well on the CFA, volunteering and demonstrating leadership are important too. I am sorry, Tds411, that you and many other very qualified candidates have received the TWE, but that inner part of you that says "go for it" is a great personal quality that will serve you well as you decide the next step toward achieving your life goals. Best wishes as you implement your Plan B!

I plan on joining a club that volunteers a lot while really focusing on my schoolwork. How would a college student go about strengthening leadership? :)

What type of leadership did you have in high school? You might start a new club in an area of interest. You might try to obtain a leadership position in an existing club on campus. My DS and DD attended a prep/university and had different leadership positions within that program. Be creative and look for groups/ organizations that you are personally interested in and get involved.
