Hi everyone, I have a couple of questions about USMA's Combat Weapons team. First, a bit of background on myself:

I am applying for the Class of 2018, and as far as activities germane to this team go, I am involved heavily with my school's cross country and track teams, and am very proficient with both the Beretta 92/M9 platform of weapons, and the AR-15/M4/M16 family. I am compete in local USPSA competitions, and am hoping to get to a regional match and possibly find a sponsor before I leave for college, hopefully to West Point. Now on to the questions...

1. Can a Plebe try out for the CWT?
2. What skills are most helpful for making the team?
3. Is there any way to email the officer-in-charge? I found his name on the WP site, but the CWT website has been removed, along with his email.
4. Lastly, what should I do to prepare myself for tryouts and competitions?

Making this team is quite literally my dream on top of a dream, so if you can help in any way, I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Mitchell

Okay so first thing is, YES. A plebe can try out for CWT. It is a highly selective club and they will have tryouts at the beginning of the academic year.

They teach you how to shoot, so you just need to be physically fit and mentally tough enough to make it through the tryout.

Honestly, I would focus on your application for c/o 2018 before worrying about this; you need to get your appointment first, and that will necessitate all of your attention. All of the clubs and stuff you want to join should be secondary.

You should hear everything you need about CWT (or any club) during club night, a week or two after reorgy week after you come back from Beast. Between now and then, though, do not worry about it.

My son (Class of 2015) is currently on the West Point Combat Weapons Team. I just talked to him on the phone about your questions.

There are about 4,400 Cadets but only about 25 members of the team. It is VERY competitive to get on the team. Currently, they take about 4-8 Plebes each year and about 4-8 Yearlings. Usually about 50-100 try-out for these slots each year. They do not take more senior Cadets (Cows and Firsties) because they would not have enough time to train them for competitions.

The try-outs are very extensive and change from year to year. However, normally the try-outs consists of physical exams (push-up, sit-ups, run) plus a long Ruck-Sack march for time. There are also extensive interviews from current members of the team. You must also must not be having any academic or conduct problems. Marksmanship is not tested - they feel they can teach you to shoot after you are on the team.

The teams shoots about once a week (normally Tuesday nights) and often go to other firing ranges on the week-ends. The team enters several national shooting competitions during the year. They also give training to other Cadets. This is a very good group of Cadets who are very "squared-away", work hard, and are very cohesive.
