As a rising junior I have earned 1 letter for soccer and my other year I was on JV. High school soccer occupies fall and competitive soccer the rest of the year. Will the academy give me the credit for competitive soccer like school soccer? Competitive prevents me from earning more letters in a different sport, but at the same time, I'm captain on that team. Any thoughts?

Short answer, yes. I played high school tennis and earned 4 letters there, but did not participate in any other sports because I played year round competitive USTA junior tournaments. Being captain of a team is great, it doesn't have to be a school team (some cadets were homeschooled, so their whole experience was outside of school). Being committed and a leader in one sport outside of school is better than participating and just getting a letter in multiple sports at school IMHO.

Soccerchic -

My daughter - and many others here - participated in a sport that is not a high school-sponsored sport. It is a club sport only but very competitive nationally. She now competes for USAFA in that sport. As a result, she never earned any varsity letters from her HS. She competed/trained year round in her club sport and was unable to participate in any of the school sports. This is not uncommon in many of the Olympic-type sports.

USAFA10s and Wing77- Thanks for the info! Just wanted to make sure because I'm always hearing about appointees lettering in 3 different sports.

Lettering in sports

My DS lettered only in one sport and was team captain his senior year. Class of 2017. One sport is fine, leadership is important.

Soccerchic, my kids never went to school and participated in some very serious sports (I'll let you guess which sport specifically by my screen name). The admissions folks realize that not all sports take place in a school setting.
