Hi!

I have also posted this on the USMA thread site. Does anyone know if nothern central florida is competitive in the area of congressional nominations? My senators are Bill Nelson and Mel Martinez. Congressman-John Mica. How many people can these people nominate?

In case anyone is wondering exactly where my district is, it covers three(barely) counties in central florida. Extreme northwest seminole county, one quarter of lake county, and a quarter of marion county. From what I know and have seen, we do not have the best quality schools here and many of the schools in these three counties are closing down because of economic problems. By the way, my district is FL 07.

USMAalltheway,

How many kids are in your school? Do you know if anyone from your school has ever attended a Service Academy? These could be some factors that determine how competitive it may be for you.

I for instance live in a large district (my graduating class alone has over 900 students), and there are several other high schools with just as many kids (if not more) in the district. The high schools in my district are all very strong; so many kids who are otherwise highly qualified might not get in since it is so competitive.

From USMA site (http://admissions.usma.edu/prospectus/step_02.cfm) : "Nominating officials may select up to 10 young people to compete for each cadetship vacancy they may have. At a minimum, most candidates are eligible for a Congressional nomination from their local Congressional Representative, two United States Senators and the Vice President of the United States. Apply for a nomination from each source for which you are eligible".

Also, from (http://durbin.senate.gov/academy.cfm) : "A Member of the United States Senate is allowed a maximum of five persons at each academy in any given year". So this could also determine competitiveness of your district, based on number of spots available.

It sounds like your district might not be too competitive, so hopefully you will have a good chance at getting into an Academy!

M19,
Thanks for replying. I don't think my district is very competitive. For example, one-third of the kids in our counties have 1.0 GPA, or have failed a grade. Only 2 schools that I've seen(and I know these counties well) brag that they are an "A" school. Also, our senators post who they have put up for nomination for the class of 09. Not even all the vacancies an nominations were filled for USMA, USAFA, and USMMA! The only one that was full was USNA.

By the way, to answer your other questions, my school is a small prepatory school that has a graduating size of 21 people for 2010( Sadly, 10 of them have 3.6 or better GPAs-unweighted,six of those-including me, being 4.0). Absolutly no one in my school has ever attended any academy. That saying, the schools in my district can't brag on intellegence. Nearly all are F schools that are usually composed of kids who don't care much about school. Thanks again for replying M19. Here's hoping for the best!

M19,

That senator website you gave me, its about Illinois. If I may ask, are you from Illinois?
I used to live near Chicago until I moved down to Florida. Kinda miss the place, and the snow-sometimes. Well, just thought that was kinda cool if your from their. Anyways, thanks again for replying.

Navalacademy12,

Hmmmm. Difficult to say. It reallys depends on just what m19 said. Do the schools in your area have high averages? Do you kno anyone from your school that has attended any academy? Since your from northern Virginia, I would guess competitive is pretty tight for USMA and I bet especially USNA. Your pretty close to D.C. and Annapolis isn't really far either. I've heard Maryland, Texas, and California are the three most competitive states. Competitive or not, you should have a good chance of getting nominated if your a well-rounded candidate. Good luck!
