Competitiveness of Marine Corps Scholarship

I didn't think my academics and test scores were strong enough to be appointed to USNA, although attending the Naval Academy has always been my dream, so I just focused on NROTC Marine Option and I was lucky enough to get a scholarship.

I saw that you said DEP helps a lot. When exactly can you join DEP and what do you do when involved with DEP?

It seems like a lot of you NROTC-USMC Option guys are better qualified than many who are accepted to the USNA, both physically, academically and in character. I see people with almost identical resume's who can barely do 5 pullups on the CFA who still get in, let alone get 1st class on the USMC PFT. Did you guys just not apply to the USNA or were you denied? Does NROTC just stress physical fitness more than the USNA?
I applied for usna but was denied bc of my "grades". But I am more happy with the Scholarship because its a "for sure" chance to become an Officer in the Marines Whereas at USNA it wasnt "for sure" so to say. In no way am I saying the Scholarship means I "am" becoming an Officer, just saying its giving me a "better" chance.

DEP is for the guys who are waiting to go to Boot Camp. you can be in it for up to 365 days then your "contract" expires i guess. The youngest to Enlist is 17 with Parental Permission aka they sign paperwork with you. Basically al you do (Station Dependant) is PT once a week with one of the recruiters.

He has it exactly right except we do an entire pool meeting once a month and do an IST.

ROFL!! we did IST's but it got to the point that everytime we showed up for pt, we only did IST's so we renamed the IST to WST aha did you go to the pool function when all the poolees in the State meet at one place and compete as a "unit"?

I guess you could call our weekly pt an PFT because we always do max pull ups and crunches and then run atleast 3 miles lol. But no we haven't, the largest event we have gone to was with the entire RS Pittsburgh. Do you have entire state meetings of poolees?

That sounds like it would be fun, but I was in DEP for nearly a year and I haven't heard anything like that from our state so it must be nice to be able to do something like that.

I received a USMC Scholarship this past year, and I'm from New Jersey. I was told that there 300 initial applicants, and that number was cut down to around 50 highly qualified applicants. The 250 that were thrown out were due to inability to finish, spelling errors, etc. Of the 50 highly qualified candidates, 9 were offered the scholarship.:shake:

Received scholarship but school full

It is a blessing to receive the Marine Corp Option NROTC scholarship but for my DS the timing was not good. He was awarded scholarship to the one school he was not admitted to. It was his fifth choice school because all others had reached capacity. We could have asked for a transfer but we were financially obligated to his housing on May 1 for his Plan B school. We just couldn't wait to see if a spot opened for him. We have to believe that it is "all meant to be" and he will apply for the PLC program after the first semester. Good luck to all the other MC Option NROTC recipients. Semper Fi!
