Cadet85, you're prior service applying this year? What did you get on your ACT. If you don't mind sharing. How did you study for it?

No I am not prior service. I am a regular high school senior. I got a 29 on my ACT this past time (my second 29), but I raised my math to a good level and my reading a couple of points. My super-scores are as follows:

English: 35
Math: 30
Reading: 29
Science: 27
Combined English/Writing: 31

Again, people tell me all the time this isn't enough and I need to retake and do better blah blah blah. That is all good and well, but You can only score so high. That being said, my ALO has told me that my math and english are SOLID scores.

As far as studying goes, I took a 1 on 1 ACT prep class at Appleton Learning center. Their teachers are great and can teach you very good tricks to gain a couple extra points on each section (I raised my science from an 18 to a 27 just in one retake). If you want a couple of the tips I learned, inbox me a message. My ACT prep course costed around $1,000. Expensive but very worth it. I would highly suggest it if you have time.

On the very last one I took though, I simply relaxed. DO NOT STRESS YOURSELF OUT-- it will cause you to over think and mess things up. I didn't study a single math formula, theory, or equation, and scored the highest math score I have. So my advice would be to relax. You will go in thinking anything you score higher is just icing on the cake, and it will give you an edge on the competition.

Also, I have a well rounded profile, so even though my scores aren't that high, I have received an LOE, and I have two nominations as of right now (Pres. and Congressional). Test scores are very important (unfortunate for me cuz I don't test that well), so this is a big area. As long as you get solid scores in there, you should be fine.

But please, don't let all of these people tell you "your tests scores aren't good enough" (I have been told this many times). Yes, they may be a bit lower than the average for USMA, but they aren't looking for a guy who is incredibly smart yet he can't do a pushup or she can't lead anybody. Let me step down from the soapbox and just say this -- do your best at all times, on all tests, and the results will show it. Work on all aspects of your profile!

Cadet85, thanks for words of encouragement. I believe that I have a solid file. I was the battalion commander my senior year in high school and got several awards during my training in the army. During basic I was the distinguish honor grad and won the leader of the cycle at ait. My main concern is my ACT scores
Math- 27, English- 26, Reading- 26, Science-26. Like you mentioned, test scores are only part of the whole packet. So I'm hoping for the best this year.

I was in a very similar situation as you are. I have very good leadership portions of my profile, but my scores used to be (and still are a little) lower than the average. It looks like you have set yourself up nicely on other portions of your whole profile, just try to bump a few of those scores up! I was told with my scores that they were they ONLY weak spot in my WCS. So raise those up a bit and you should be fine.

Hey guys, thought I could drop in and give advice on higher test scores. I honestly believe that to raise test scores you MUST take the test over and over again until the actual sitting. For example, before I took my first ACT, I took about 6 practice exams. I have a 35 composite. Good luck to you all!
