I have read that cadets buy/are issued a computer their first year. Can a 1st year bring his own computer and use it rather than the one issued by the academy?

From what I read, it is possible but seriously isn't recommended, but I haven't read anywhere that says you cant have two computers if you'd like a mac or something. To be honest although if what you want isn't something like a mac I cant see the point of going through the trouble. West Point computers are up to date top notch computers with great specs, most importantly they are specially programed for all the things you will need throughout your education and there are staff present trained to and will only fix west point computers. If you were to bring your own computer you will be responsible for everything and if something bad was to happen it would be completely up to you to fix it.

I know a few people who have an extra personal laptop but nobody that has used it to replace the issued one. Not sure if it is possible, but if it where it would be extremely difficult as our laptops are issued with specific programs and need to be able to read your CAC card, among a variety of other things.

Honestly, I don't think you are allowed to replace your government laptop with a personal one though.

I currently own a really nice gaming laptop. I know I won't have much time for gaming during the year, but would it be an issue if I brought it up anyway (just in case I DO have an ounce of free time at some point)? I wouldn't want to replace the one I would receive from the Academy (I would solely use the one I own now for "leisure")

Yeah, that is perfectly fine. I knew a few people who have an alienware laptops solely for video games. Just remember, if you use the USMA network, you are still subject to their regulations.

I know this thread is a little old but does the same apply to personal desktops? I just built my own mostly for games.

As long as it fits and doesn't detract from the military appearance of the room then it should be fine. You are limited to 2 monitors (issued laptop included) so you won't be able to use your external with it but that's about it. I am sure you will be able to rig your laptop to the desktop monitor.

A previous cadet told me that TV card is included in the computers.

I'm not sure if there's a given limit to how many hours can be watched on it, or the availability of channels for that matter. But the cadets have told me that they have used it to watch foreign channels as assignments for foreign languages.

What are my chances of getting an appointment to USMA?

I'm a junior in highschool (homeschooled), haven't taken the SAT/ACT yet, been doing practice tests. Currently working toward earning my Girl Scout Gold Award (equivelent of the Eagle Scout), 4-H member for 8 years, compete in horse shows and quiz bowls. Held officer positions in clubs (president, vice president and secretary), work a part time job, volunteer for a local food bank.

I'm just curious, but how are you presidents in clubs if you are homeschooled? Other than that, SAT/ACT scores are crucial in my opinion and nothing can really be determined without it. What is your GPA? How rigorous is your coursework? Try to add more leadership positions to your resume and athletics can help alot as well.

Other than that, you shouldn't post such an unrelated comment in a thread like this. Those who may really need help in a topic related to computers may find your comment to be very inconvenient.

Nobody is allowed a TV. Our computers come with a program that streams TV online though and a lot of monitors are just as good (if not better) than most TVs.

Just a side note, guys. if you are spending enough time playing games that you need a separate computer or enough time watching TV that your computer monitor won't do it, then you had better rethink how you're spending your time here.

I just bought a t.v. a year ago, it is going to be obsolete by the time I get out of West Point. :frown:

You can always sell the t.v. before you leave for Beast. Put it up on Craigslist or a comparable advertising website. You won't get back what you bought it for, but you are getting a nice education, uniforms, books, a computer, food, etc. for "free" for the next 4 years. It'll even out.

    WHAT WEST POINT IS FREE?

Just kidding, Caigslist is really creepy I think I will just give the tv to my bro.

Its a funny thought although, how much we will miss out on for the next four years. Its completely worth it of course and I wouldn't trade it for anything but I am also excited to see what the world will look like four years from now.

haha we are going to West Point, not prison (although some current cadets may want to argue with me on that :yllol: ). We won't miss THAT much.

Is there any free time at West Point? I know that I'll be beyond busy, and that academics, academy stuff (like the "Knowledge Book" etc), and playing Football are the top priorities for me. Even if there is no "free time," it's not going to make me rethink my decision to attend; I'm going no matter what!

However, will there be a point (eventually) that I will have time to just do whatever?

Some weekends appear to be so full, there's no time for anything. Other weekends, I hear of my cadet playing ultimate w/ his friends, going to the mall, movies, bowling, playing video games, reading, etc. It also depends on what your goals are academically. Some cadets study constantly, as they have goals of a top 10 finish. Others just want to finish. You'll figure it out.:thumb:
