Computers?

That is seriously expensive for a laptop used for schoolwork... but I guess it is a tablet, and you don't have a choice...

Tablet, mouse, keyboard, docking station, cords, card reader, external hard drive...it adds up pretty quickly!

besides if im correct that money comes out of the allowance they give you so it really isnt like your spending $2000 especially after you're already getting a free education(my dad reminds me constantly that its not really free and that you have an obligation to the military afterwards, but really most people who go to the AFA were going to try to get in the military some way or another and ur also garantied a career as soon as you get out of college so I look at it as a free win-win education.)

The money comes out of your earnings. You get paid while at the academy. Everything that is issued is paid for by you.
Do they issue printers at AFA? I know they don't at Navy but they do at West Point.

they don't issue printers or additional monitors. Many people like to get these, but should wait until the Wing approves of them for the 4*s. we were allowed them right after Parents Weekend, I think!

Printers are available in each of the squadrons, however, most 4 degrees would rather not have to venture out to the squadron room to get the printed items from the printer. They also tend to run out of paper a lot. A nice printer is a good present from the parents. Our son liked the three-in-one printer/scanner/copier because he could scan in checks he received from relatives, rather that having to run down to the bank to deposit them. He also asked for a second monitor (19") to use in his room, since the tablet screen is rather small. Like af2012 said, though, wait until your cadet gets word on what will be allowed.

External monitors and printers are very valuable assets, IMO. I can more easily work on multiple documents at once (which is really nice for a history major, since I can pull up a JSTOR article and write my paper at the same time). Also, I HIGHLY recommend getting a printer, as most squadron's run out of paper frequently.

Would a computer brought from home have access to the internet, or would it have to be used offline only? Like Kt, I would be tempted to have my MacBook shipped out eventually.

My understanding is that an alternate computer would not have access to the network .... though I have heard of cadets with other computers (in addition to the issued one) but I can't imagine to what benefit if they can't get on the network. I also doubt that an alternate computer would be allowed to be connected to the issued laptop via firewire or memory stick for transfer of data ... Perhaps someone else has more insight into this.

Certainly, I agree that I see no real use to have a computer without access to the internet. The only benefit I saw to potentially having a Mac is using its webcam to iChat with folks back home. For anything else, the issued notebook would be just fine.

You will not be allowed to connect to the gov network with anything but issued equipment. Yes their are cadets with their own computers, but recent changes in security and threats have changed that.

There appear to be a few locations with open wifi access. Daughter may get a small cheap laptop so she can maintain and use itunes for her I-Pod. Otherwise it looks like an I-Phone and switch to AT&T soon.

since they have restrictions, like phone use only on weekends, they will probably regulate that

Good luck finding an unblocked program to use the webcam. Besides not being able to use it of course...

Get used to not talking directly with family and friends for awhile besides e-mail and facebook. You'll live.
