Computers/printers

What types of printers (either by brand or capabilities) have proved most useful in the past? Should it be a combined printer, copier, scanner? Should it be color or is black and white sufficient? When we deliver it (A Day or later) should we deliver a case of paper also? I don't know how much storage space is available (is there room to store a case of paper or do cadets buy/store a ream at a time)?

Well, at least there is good news somewhere. Win 7 is already in the marketing stages to europe (they are releasing a version without IE8 there) so it should be available here shortly. As soon as the DoD approves we could upgrade away from Vista!

I'd suggest an all-in-one copier/scanner/printer with color. A ream or two of paper should last for many months as long as your cadet doesn't go printer crazy. I normally print using the squadron printer and use mine if that one breaks or I need to make a color print. My scanner has been an important device, especially with USAA.

Good news!

I use Firefox usually instead of IE... not sure why.

Speaking of web browsers (sorta). Are cadets allowed to use Google Chrome as their web browser? I could have sworn I saw some cadets at orientation using it but I wasn't certain...

do you guys really think the academy is going to care what web browser you use.

Technically speaking, yes they care. The Academy also houses research data on the network and therefore has to be careful about network integrity.

That being said Firefox is DoD approved so I am pretty sure it would be completely okay, but I haven't checked the approved list for chrome. I'll see what I can find, but I can't make any promises since most of my better contacts are TDY right now.

what size monitor is allowed? i was thinking my cadet at orientation said 24", but I'm not sure.... Or, is it up to the squad?

I use firefox. Only use IE for the network because it doesn't like my firefox.... chrome is also ok as well as opera and safari. Come on, it doesn't matter!

Max monitor size is 24".

First of all, I have to say that these forums have been a fantastic resource during my application process to the Academy... Thank you so much!!!

I was wondering if they would allow screens with a built in webcam? eg:

Thanks!!!

My understanding is that while you can have a web cam it won't do you any good because you can't use them ... so in answer to your question - it's okay if it's there but it won't work.

why can't you?

why can't you?

I don't know ... it doesn't work? I am not a computer person ... we had wanted to get one for our D so we could see her when we talked but turned out she was not allowed to have it set up in a way that would allow for that. Something to do with the network, I think? But really I have no idea- what I do know is that she can't have one ... don't know if it is a technical thing or if it is a squadron thing ...

Sorry - maybe a cadet can shed more light on it?

Thanks. In that case I'd have to guess that it is the squadron that isn't allowing it, I don't see how there could be any technical issues... Oh well, I was thinking of getting one myself.

i bet it has to do with bandwidth... video conferencing uses a crazy amount of bandwidth and if you had 100 cadets using them, they could probably shut the network down... i was thinking maybe after christmas to take my macbook and get the verizon wireless broadband internet... only 5 gb a month but it could be used entirely for video chats home..

That's not a half-bad idea, Matt. Though AT&T has no charges (or very little) if you go over the limit.
