Concerned about AFROTC Enrollment Allocation

The paying for school part is easy if you don't get an EA.

A) Go Army ROTC and even if they don't give you a scholarship, you can do their SMP program since you have completed the 1st 2 years of AFROTC already.

B) Enlist in the Air Force or any other branch and complete your degree online while serving active duty

They weigh gpas heavily because that is what the AFROTC board weighs heavily. It won't end there for EA, but again for AFSC, so keep getting better and better grades.

I am not one of the mindset to say join another branch for scholarships. 4 yrs AD in a branch you didn't want to be in to start with is a steep price...especially if they send you to Korea or the sandbox for 12-18 months.

There are a tone a loans, grants, etc out there besides the military.

ERAU does give out the highest amount of candidates...however, I do not believe statistically they give out the highest percentage...purely based on the size of their det.

I believe last yr when the SFT board was released for CS200's they had @50-55%.

DO an eyeball check around your det. If you are in the top 50% for gpa, than you should be okay.

Good luck.

OBTW I know you are anxious, but you need to just say to yourself I gave it 250%, I gave it down to the last drop of blood. If you can say that, than no matter what happens, you will know you tried and this was just not your fate at this stime.

Also, AROTC is not a safe bet anymore like yrs past. Currently they have already stated that this yr they will be decreasing the amount of scholarships awarded drastically compared to LY (I think it was @700+); it is either clarkson or Marist that have stated their BN scholarships will decrease by a lot of cadets. I also believe on the AROTC thread they stated Army is expect to reduce AROTC rolls by 32% in the next few yrs.

I appreciate the feedback and advice. I had no plans of switching to AROTC or enlisting, I was sort of dead set on the Air Force. The most likely thing I would do is look into Navy POC, but I know the window for entering that is closing.

I was going to try and avoid loans at all costs but it might come to that now.

And with the ERAU thing, I know it's a big det but it's a common misconception that because it's a bigger det we send a lower percentage, but in reality it's always higher. Of the 65 that got put in for an EA last year, we sent 52, and I know that beat whatever the national average was. UPT is a little different we send about 68% of those who are put in for a slot.

I just don't know how much worse it'll be this time around. 1800 the new number for EAs, down from 2200. Our GPA cutoff last year was around 2.7-2.8, but we had some that were around 2.5 get through.

The reason why our cutoff is lower is because we have a ton of engineers and the O-6 acknowledges that it's tough so we get a little boost.

2.95 is on the bubble but with the tech degree and a 99 PFA and solid AFOQT scores I feel I might get in over the edge. But it's just not knowing where HQ will draw the line that's eating at me.

I heard that this year HQ is giving 75% of the EAs to techs, but that sounds a little ridiculous. Would love to know the date they're sending out packages too!

Once again I appreciate the feedback and support, I keep you all posted what's going on.

Look, the fact at this time it is out of your hands. You can do all the hand wringing you want, but it is up to the board right now.

Life in the military is not only about what you know, but your timing. I would love to sugar coat it, but I can't.

Class of 13 is probably the last class with an abundance where the AF needs to whittle away to get the numbers in line for the FY budget 11-12.

It is all timing/manpower at this stage of the game for cadets.

I really hope each and everyone of you gets their dream/hope. I know personally as a Mom that every waking moment is a countdown to the board results.

I get it. I also will say to all of you what I say to my own child (waiting for AFSC board 12), if you can say you gave 250%, than it is fate for your life at this moment. It is what you do when you get notified that matters the most!

You can throw in the towel, or live to fight another day. Your choice. Nobody will think less of you or more of you based on that decision. To stand up at this young age and say I will live and die for our country is an amazing statement. A statement that the avg 19 yo would never say.

Good luck. G*d bless. THANK YOU for just putting your name in the hat.

Sorry I was beginning to repeat myself, I guess I'm more on edge than I thought...

I understand though, and I really appreciate your input. It's all luck of the draw now. Best defense is to just not think about it till the time comes.

Does anyone know when we typically hear whether or not we get the ea? Also if you could explain how we actually find out (phone, email, etc), I'd appreciate it.

There are a lot of different dates floating around for when we will hear, I've seen as early as March 10th and as late as the middle of April. Although my guess is March 28th because that is what the majority of the cadre seem to be saying and when results were released last year.

How I found out last year was I got an email from one of the cadre that results had come in and to call him (for cross-town cadets) or to go report-in to him for cadets who go to the school were the detachment is as soon as they could. But that was my det, it might be different for yours.

The EA's should be in next week. It will be crazy to see what the numbers are going to actually look like when they come out. I have a 3.7 gpa as a tech major w/ a 94 on the PFA but don't feel to confident since I was only a 250. I really have no idea how my ranking went which worries me.

EAs are going to be released tommorrow. We have to set up appointments with our CoC this week to so he can tell us whether or not we got one. Good luck to you.

Interesting that they are going to stretch it out for a few days. Usually they try to address it like a band aid...rip it off quickly. Typically the reason why they do it this way is because from a morale POV it is not good to let it linger for days.

For our DS's det, they were called the night before and given 1 of 2 times to report as a group. One group were going on to Maxwell SFT, the other was not. Neither group knew prior to reporting. The command IMPO did it right, they pulled in the group that would not be going first. It gave them time to absorb their emotions.

OK so I'm pretty happy right now because yesterday I got my EA. But when I got the news, they didn't mention which FTU I'd be attending. When do we find this out? Does anyone really know?

You will now go through a lot more.

I believe DS found out about 2-3 weeks later.

What will occur now is going to be fast paced.

1. You will have to submit medical records, shots, and a short physical. Be prepared. Contact the folks to get you medical records. Check to see if the college health center will do it, if not start researching docs in the area that will accept their insurance.

LY due to swine flu cadets needed to get that shot. They also needed mennogoccal. (sp?)

2. You will do a bag drag, and if you are far from home, without a car it can be an issue.

This is what I remembered from our DS's list:
1. White tee's. last 4 dig of SS using a laundry marker placed on the tag
2. Camo tee's same as above
3. Brown socks
4. Moleskin
5. Sunscreen
6. Name tags
7. X amt of:
~~~ razors
shaving cream
shampoo
soap
sunscreen
lip balm
8. Specific size binders, spirals. pencils and colored pens.
9. Ziplock baggies --- think it was gallon and quart.
10. Glasses --- if you have an eye issue you will need 2 pairs. If you don't have 2 get it now.
The list is long. Our DS's det req.a bag drag, and they were graded on fulfilling it.
Tip, after the bag drag they allow you to bring it home with you. Take your blues shirt and place it in a gallon ziploc baggie. Remove the air, seal. This will keep them from getting too wrinkled.
The reason for the last 4 dig on the tees is because they do your laundry.
They will ask you to select the airport you fly out of. When you get there they will corral you with other cadets. If you go after the 1st class you will see cadets leaving and that smile on their face is devilish. They are smiling because they made it and laughing that you now will feel the pain.
I'm back with the news and I didn't get an EA. I'm not too upset because I did my best and I learned that it wasn't exactly my stats that held me back but more so my non-tech major. Whoever said that HQ was giving out 75% of EAs to techs, I think was right because I also heard a similar statistic. A kid at my det who had a lower GPA, PFA, and Coc ranking than I did got an EA because of his tech major (and we were both 250s). All in all I'm not blaming my major for not getting one but in comparison to a few cadets I know, that's what it came down to. Regardless I had a great experience in AFROTC and I wish everyone the best of luck at FT!.
Newsflash to the upcoming 200s: Tech majors/critical lang. majors count big time! If you don't have one, consider switching if possible because from looking around my det (who gave out more EAs than the national avg) it can be your ticket in.
Thanks to everyone on this forum who gave me advice and encouragement.
"EAs are going to be released tommorrow. We have to set up appointments with our CoC this week to so he can tell us whether or not we got one. Good luck to you. "
Yeah my commander is gone for the week so we don't find out till next week. The anticipation is killing most of us. Does anyone know what the percentages ended up looking like of people getting selected or not? Also any idea as to what PFA and GPA served as the average/cut off? I'm just really curious to see how i personally stack up against everyone else out there who have been selected already. Thanks
Thanks so much for that chart. Where did you get that from? By the looks of it I should be fine but I guess I'll have to wait until next week to know for sure
I'm class of 2015. Should I be worried to get an EA?
Yea you should be worried because it doesn't look like this is changing any time soon. As long as our economy is in shambles it will be like this, or worse. If they start to actually make some serious defense cuts (which are needed) then who knows how competitive it can become. At the end of the day you can only control your actions though, you just have to give it your all and if it doesn't work out the world definitely does not end.
I agree that every Cadet should be concerned and do their best, but I do not think the classes of 2014 and after will see FT slots this competitive in the future. The AF needed to do some paring down on a class that was too large and that is what I think you are seeing with these numbers. I'm sure 100% of 200s will NOT get FT next year but I think there will be a smaller group of applicants and therefor a larger overall percentage will be accepted. Just an opinion...
Hearing this news, would it be smart for me to join AFROTC as a junior? I just talked to someone, and she was kind of warning me of the risk and letting me know how competitive it was. I'm an tech major, my major being IT and my gpa around a 3.1 at the moment, possibly higher after summer. Would it be worth this risk, or is it just like a 5% chance of me getting a FT slot? Seeing how you guys had such a hard time with receiving a slot.
