Condolences to the USCGA family from the USNA family on the loss of 2 cadets in a car crash this weekend.

My thoughts and prayers to the families, and the entire USCGA family. The loss of any young life is filled with tremendous pain, but when the loss is young lives filled with limitless potential the pain seems to run much deeper.

How sad.

I'm sure in a country as small as the Republic of Georgia, the loss of these two members of their military will hit just as hard over there as it does in New London.

I heard their Prime Minister has visited the families of these two CG cadets, now eternal members of the class of 2015 and the class of 2017.

Absolutely devastating. As one poster said above, the Academy is such a small place that its not hard not to have a face to put to a name when you hear it. I knew both of these cadets, one of which was a swab and fourth class in my company last year. I also know the cadet who survived, I can't imagine what he must be feeling right now. My prayers are with the families of the cadets, the Academy, and my Coast Guard family.

Prayers to the friends and family of the cadets. As others have said, the Coast Guard Academy is a very small, tight community. This is hard on the cadets and your CGA alumni mourn with you. Prayers for the cadets as well.

Many prayers are being said for the cadets' families and the entire USCGA family from the West Point family

I saw this on their facebook page, very glad to hear they will represent the CGA at the funeral in their home country.

As the CGA community remembers Cadets Makaridze and Gorjoladze, several events are planned to honor their memory:

Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11th, an Academy delegation will take part in the official military escort to take Cadets Makaridze and Gorjoladze home to Georgia. They will remain in Georgia to represent the U.S. Coast Guard at the official Georgian Ministry of Defense military funeral.

On Monday morning, March 16th, the Commandant of Cadets and staff will meet with the Corps to discuss the tragic incident, answer questions and address immediate concerns.

On Wednesday, March 18th, the Corps of Cadets and chaplains will host an afternoon Reflection Service in Leamy Auditorium where the Academy community will be encouraged to come together to remember and reflect on the lives of Cadets Makaridze and Gorjoladze.

In approximately three weeks, the Academy will host an official Memorial Service to honor our lost cadets. We plan to be joined by senior Coast Guard leaders, Georgian government officials, Georgian cadets attending other service Academies, members of the Georgian community here in the United States, friends from near and far, and the families of Cadets Makaridze and Gorjoladze.

We know that many in the Academy community are struggling during this difficult time. Our Coast Guard Academy chaplains, counselors and other work-life resources stand ready to assist you or anyone you might know who is having a particularly hard time. As the Corps returns on Sunday, March 15th, we will have additional counselors from D1 and LANTAREA available for as many days needed to help our cadets cope with this tragic loss.

Well done.

If that timeline is at all confusing, remember the Coast Guard Academy is on Spring Break, so the cadets won't be back until next week (well, the end of this weekend).

My deepest sympathies for all the families involved and also to the Coast Guard Academy family.

From the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Facebook:

We have received numerous inquiries on how one can honor the memories of our lost cadets and help support their families in Georgia. The Coast Guard Foundation has provided an unsolicited offer to use their Fallen Heroes Fund as a means to honor Cadets Makaridze and Gorjoladze and support their loved ones. Simply go to the Foundation’s web site and follow the directions for the Fallen Heroes Fund to honor Cadet “Soso” Makaridze and/or Cadet “Beso” Gorjoladze. You may also honor our lost cadets by mailing your support to:
