DS has a question that I was unsure about....Our Congressman has scheduled his Academy Day for June 2, DS is attending SLS and cannot attend the Academy Day, SLS begins June 2. The question is: will this negatively affect his application for a nomination? Will the Congressman possibly hold it against DS when he receives the nom app and DS name is not on the list of attendees at Academy Day? Any suggestions? Thanks.

It shouldn't affect anything at all. These are information days where the Academies come and explain their roles, entrance requirements, application process etc. If you can attend yourself it might be helpful to be there to gather info... but that's all it is. Ther IS normally a sign in sheet but not being there will have no effect on your son.

Thanks Kinnem, my wife doesn't know it yet but I know where she will be June 2 at 1200 hrs!

Send a Note

If I were advising my DS in this (and I had better check when our Congressman's Academy Day is since my DS is attending the first session of SLS also!!), I would suggest he write a short note to the congressman thanking him for the invitation, but declining it due to his attendance at SLS.

Just a thought...

Not a bad idea. For what it's worth, I went to no Academy Days (just never fit with my schol and/or sports schedules) and I got two noms, one frmo each of my Senators (1 to USMA & 1 to USNA). I did, however, make pre-emptive contact with one of the MOC offices to get info, etc, from the MOC's coordinator. I suppose previous contact/interest may help if you are on the bubble.

In competitive areas it is always good to stay in contact with the staffers for the MOC. They will process your application, ours are very good about providing feedback, etc.

You won't get a nom with a substandard app just because of notes or showing up. But it is a chance to make an impression and be more than a sheet of paper.

I was surprised to have the staffer for the MOC DS was nominated by to mention him by name to us at a picnic sendoff. In our area they know the candidates which make the short lists far more than I realized.

Same is true for admissions events. Not required, but it's an opportunity for input, to show interest/drive, and to confirm it's what you want.

DS was added to NASS due to an interaction he had at an admissions event. No idea if he would have made it in otherwise.

Was added into SLS based on an email dialog with admissions. Without knowing it, he had been initially declined for SLS. But based on the interaction admissions changed their mind, told him when he got the decline letter to ignore it.

This does not mean you should bug MOC offices or staffers, but the various events an opportunity to be more than a resume.
