I received a Nomination for West Point this week from my congressman. I have not heard back from my Senators application or the Vice President application, but I have a question about applying to multiple Academies. West Point is my number 1 and it was my number 1 when I applied to to all my nomination sources. If I only receive this Nomination for West Point are the other Academy’s out of the picture?

In order to get into the SAs - you need a nomination and be 3q.

There are anecdotal data points where a SA could find a nomination for someone they want. There are also people with LOAs that don’t get in because they didn’t get a nom.

If you get an interview with a senate committee, you could ask for a different nomination.

What did you put down in your essays in the nomination applications? Can you adequately explain the change in their minds?

West Point is my number 1 and in all my applications input them as number 1. I was just curious if I didn’t get into West Point if I had a shot at the other Academy’s or if that nomination was only good for West Point? I applied to the Army ROTC scholarship and already got accepted to my back up school.

You can’t “move your given nomination from one SA to another” the nominations are given for specific academies; if that is what you are asking.

If you haven’t already had interviews for any MOC you can inform the interview panel that you received a WP nomination and would prefer to change your first choice to a different academy. That will likely lead to some tricky questions you will need to be able to answer.

It is not a bad thing to have multiple nominations to one SA even at the risk of having none to another. Especially if you have a strong preference for one of the branches of service (and since you put WP as your number 1 and AROTC as your back up, it would appear that you do). Multiple nominations give the SA more opportunity to find a spot for you. If that is your authentic desire; that is where you should probably put your effort.

To answer your question, there are very few paths to an appointment without a nomination. The SA do have a few options that they control but they are used sparingly. So do you have “a shot” at another Academy? A very slim, almost non-existent one. Congratulations on your WP nomination and your plan B college acceptance!

Some senators and congressmen ask for the order of your interest in the service academies and may recommend you to one or more of them. So its definitely possible to get nominated to more than one. This is all left up to the Senators and congressman to decide how they conduct the nomination process.
