Could very well be the least 'qualified' candidate

That's probably right. Our school is near a large city and is in a not so great neighborhood. Not a lot of high achievers.

Great job Ochoac!!! (Obviously, you are not nearly as unqualified as you thought. :)) Jake, here's hoping that you get an appointment as well!

(I didn't apply to USMA, but I'm still really excited for you guys! :D)

So I wonder, because you said you are half Mexican, are you first generation American, or perhaps first generation college student? Those types of statistics also help round out class composition goals. If your school has low test scores and you are on the high end of things, you are overcoming a tough academic atmosphere. Congrats to you!
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what exactly is a first generation American? My mother immigrated to the US in her early 20s from Hong Kong but my dad grew up in the US; would this make me a 1st generation immigrant?

You'd have to check w/ admissions. A first generation American is generally someone whose parents were born in another country....but for what I've seen at our HS, for college admission purposes, it doesn't really help if the "other country" is a European one. Colleges are also interested in a student who is the first in the family to go to college.

More like second generation. It looks like you were born in US, not sure or did miss the posting about you being born in another country. You can't be an immigrant if you were born in US.

My mom was born and raised here. My dad in Mexico. I was born in grand rapids, so we are in the same boat. I still don't know how I got in, especially this early. I was planning on plan b to happen

According to this a first generation American is not born outside the US. But I'm not sure if I qualify since 1 parent is an immigrant and the other is not.

Grand rapids is in west Michigan. It's worth a Google, it's a great up and coming city.
