CULP pay, round III...

Stay patient. Very patient.

I'm not sure what info I can get on my side, since most mission cadre hear various things from various sources (especially those cadre from outside USACC), but I will try. I'm still in country for a good bit, so hearing what's going around the CULP offices is tricky.

FYI

DS returned from CULP mission July 8th. He received 400$ incidental pay in his bank account Friday. Not sure if more is to come or not.

Wait a free vacation and they aren't getting paid? Oh the travesty....

Hardship/danger pay for a cadet? I mean c'mon. If someone has an actual legit job over there I get it but cadets don't have that responsibility. I know experiences vary but for the vast majority of cadets it is a vacation. Even for cadre I think the validity for extra pay is iffy. This is unless CULP has changed in the last few years, before it was some volunteering and beach-side/touristy fun...

Medical should def be covered though

Lol, haven't found anything "touristy" in one of the bottom 5 poorest countries. You missed the point though. It's not about the money. But if they are going to require cadets to adhere to GO's, UCMJ, and the standards of soldiers (which they are being held to, and should be), it needs to be reciprocated. Nobody is demanding to be paid like a king (or even close to an O1), but atleast guarantee they will be paid the fair wage they were originally told. The imminent danger pay and hardship duty-location pay (which the country I'm in qualifies for both) was merely to make a point (and the army re certifies those regularly, which apply to everyone in the country regardless of duty. There are folks that never travel outside the embassy compound or their secure housing that rake that in). If a cadet isn't being paid as a soldier or treated as one, one could ask the question if they are covered for medical and other things. And being in a country that is still on the brink of re-entering civil war where Americans are forbidden from walking on the streets between the hours of 6pm-7am, Somali terrorists send threats to Americans on a weekly basis, and everyone is briefed on how to react to gunfire in the city, those are questions I'd want answered. Not a "well I would think medical would be covered" or "I'm sure you fall under support from CJTF-HOA if **** hit the fan". But I mean a serious, no ****, answer if I'm going to be here for 3 months.

And if it's not covered, that's cool, I'm not looking to travel to Main Street USA. But that's something I'd like to know so I can make necessary plans on my side should something happen. And if were not prepared to provide that support for our future leaders, maybe we don't extend the program to those countries. Or send a CA company there to do it. And if we just want to make them vacations (which I haven't been seeing in my region, though I know it's different from almost all the rest) then let's call them that at the beginning, and put aside the uniforms, standards, UCMJ, orders, etc. It's only a vacation.

Is it possible for a cadet, MSII, to do CULP and Air Assault? I've heard one cadet was doing this, but it seems unfeasible. DS has learned much, but sometimes I doubt some vagaries of the sources.

Yes, it is possible (assuming no new restrictions have been imposed in the last two years). CULP is much easier to get into than AA and lasts about a month. Air Assault School is less than two weeks though it is rigorous. Because it's competitive for slots, your son would have to be high on his class OML to be recommended by his cadre.

Yes you can do CULP and other courses in the same summer. A cadet from one of my teams came from Airborne and the current team here all came straight from LDAC.

DS went from AA to LDAC. He said there were a handful of MS-II's at AA and most of them had arrogant attitudes because they thought they were god's gift to the army because they had been selected to go as II's and were there with MS-III's and a few enlisted and officers.

His air assault class was about 80% cadets, don't know if they run cadets thru other air assault classes too or if they try to put them all in one.

Air assault is physically demanding so you had better be in shape before you get there, but it is much more demanding mentally with everything you have to learn in the short time span. Not hard to pass but easy to fail. About 17% of his AA class failed, more from the testing than the physical part.

Cadet Pay

According to people in the know, the Cadet Pay for attending CULP is still being worked. Keep the faith.

This is what I received a few days ago. Good news

FY 14 CULP Cadet Base Pay was delayed due to a Department of Army G1 review and interpretation of Army Regulation 145-1. this situation appears to be favorably resolved by the Secretary of the Army but timing of the receipt of the back pay is still being worked by US Army Cadet Command G-8 and Department of Finance & Accounting.

Bull,

What is the CULP cadet base pay? DS received $400.00 in July. I thought this was for incidentals. But was this his base pay?

Cajun....that was incidentals, base pay is X amount of $ per day and **if** I recall correctly, they were expecting to receive about $800 for a 30 day CULP mission. I know it was going to be enough to pay (6) months of car insurance for my son :thumb:

WOW!! 6 months car insurance? That's great. Maybe I need to move there.. Louisiana has high insurance rates:unhappy: But it will make a dent in it. Funny you should mention that. I received insurance renewal this morning. HA.

Well if it is $800.00, that would be awesome. We really weren't expecting anything besides what we received thus far. Yeah!!

Thanks Bull, we shall see what happens..

Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later. After filing my travel voucher back in August, I'm looking at just over $5,000 for my trip which would be nice.
