Hello! I know how much this forum helped me get informed about the Academy experience and survive the waiting game with getting an appointment, so I would like to give back! Feel free to ask me any questions.

This may be a bad question, but if you received a waiver and a nomination do you stand a decent chance?

If you received a waiver and are all clear with DoDMERB, and have a nomination then it's just a waiting game same as anyone else. Hope that helps :)

To add on, Academies don't often ask for a waiver if they didn't think you had a good chance (at least depending on what the waiver was for). I know someone who had a small fracture in their spine.... the Academies asked for a waiver and they got in, supposedly (someone can verify?) because the rest of the application was pretty stellar.

I am planning on majoring in Computer Science. I've always had a passion for computers and especially programming. Hope to do great things with what I learn and especially with the opportunities here :)

First off, thank you for your dedication and service to our Country.

Second, thank you for your response.

My DS is interested in majoring in CompSci too. How much computer experience/education did you have before attending USAFA?

How difficult is the CompSci major track at USAFA? Have you taken any of the preliminary classes yet?

What do you plan on doing after graduation as of now?

Hello and thanks for being willing to answer questions,

I have two questions. First, what is something you wish you knew before attending the Academy?

Second of all, how difficult are the academics at the Academy compared to your previous classes? (High School or college).

I have minimal programming experience, however I do understand how it works and would be able to pick it up if I put the time into it. In terms of actual computer knowledge I have been working with computers since I was little, so I would say I'm fairly advanced.

From what I have gathered, it really depends on how passionate you are about your major. You really have to pick something you will enjoy doing, especially if it involves a lot of work. With that being said, the more programming experience he has the easier it should be for him, along with other computer knowledge which goes along with the major. I would greatly recommend him trying to learn some programming before coming if he hasn't already, especially since there time management is a challenge here. I will be taking the first class next semester, which deals with the RAPTOR programming language.

What do you plan on doing after graduation as of now?

I've always wanted to be a pilot, and maybe an astronaut one day. I hope to be able to get a graduate school slot first though :)

Feel free to ask any further questions, I will try my best to elaborate to the best of my knowledge!

I wish I had realized just how hard it would be, especially my first year, as I would have worked even harder and prepared more before coming. On the same note, however, I am glad to not have been given any chance to regret my decision to come.

At least with my experience so far, academics are at a whole new level for me. Classes run on the basis that you learn the material on your own before class, and the teacher will go over the material--lecture style. I never had to study in high school, so this was a great change for me. The adaptation you make with the new lifestyle is what really will determine how well you handle academics. It's critical to have a plan for tackling academics here, especially given the limited time you have. With that being said, if you can figure out your time management skills and study habits, and also balance your other duties and personal life, you will do just fine. You have the resources here and will develop the ability to handle the academics here, but what really matters is having that solid foundation for how to handle whatever comes your way. Expect to be challenged and expect to have failures and make mistakes, but let those times build you up and make you better--that for me was perhaps wanted one of the greatest lessons I am learning here.

I could say a whole lot more on this subject, as it has been my greatest personal challenge here after Basic, and I hope to help as many people out as I can. So feel free to ask more questions :)

Thanks for the response!

One more unrelated from my last one, what clubs, sports, or any extracurriculars are you doing?

I'll pipe in here as another 4 degree. Almost everyone does intramurals twice a year here which can be pretty fun. I personally do martial arts here and would like to do more community service (there are tons of options) but my schedule has been stretched a little thin. There are tons of extracurricular options for anything you're interested in!
