Would it be reasonable at all to attend a CVW after receiving an appointment? I have never attended a CVW before, but went to summer seminar.
My main motive for going would be to solidify my decision between the offers of two academies. Though Navy has been my "number one", I would just like to make sure before making my decision to commit (if that makes any sense).

    Thank you.

I think that is a good reason to attend one if it financially works for your family and you truly are trying to make a decision.

That would be a perfect reason to attend CVW.

I would suggest that you visit both if it's possible.

Yes, my DD did CVW and overnight visit at USNA and USMA after having the appointments in hand for both. He went into it thinking he would be choosing USNA, but after his visit to USMA, he changed his mind. He's loving it at USMA and has no regrets.

I would encourage you to visit also. Keep in mind that the other factor in any decision is what you want to do AFTER the academy of your choice. The Academy is only 4 years. The commitment post graduation is at least twice as long, and perhaps more for aviators and others.

My son has not yet been accepted to either USMA or USNA yet, but was told that he is very competitive, and to be patient. His usma RO told him that if he would like to set up an overnight visit he can call. He then emailed USNA to see if an overnight could be arranged there as well, so that he could make one trip and do them back to back, but was told that USNA overnight visits were not available at this time. That seemed strange to me.

    Anyone with any insight here?

He is going to set one up at west point. Maybe USAFA too, but that is a tougher trip logistically.

USNA has designated times called Candidate Visit Weekends. There is info on the USNA website about when these are held and what they are (not to mention dozens of threads on this site about them). It also gives info on how to request one. I do not know how West Point does them, so if he does a West Point visit, it might not align with when a USNA CVW is. It's not as simple as asking to visit on a certain day. CVW's also have a limit on number of attendees so if he wants to visit follow the instructions on the website to request one.

Here is what the USMA website says about overnight visits:
"An overnight visit is available to applicants (candidates) who have received an Offer of Admission, a Letter of Assurance or a Letter of Encouragement that they will most likely be offered admission.

You can schedule an overnight visit Monday through Friday during the academic term. Your program will begin at 8:45 a.m. and conclude around 1:00 p.m. the following day. Just request a visit either online or by calling (845) 938 -5760 between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday."

    http://www.usma.edu/admissions/sitepages/visit_overnight.aspx

By the sounds of it, you can't schedule an overnight visit unless your have an LOE, LOA, and/or an appointment.

Sons RC offered, and gave him the name and number of the person to call to schedule an overnight visit. Although he has not received even a LOE. Son was hoping to coordinate visits at both academies so he can make only one trip east. But will schedule just the USMA visit.
