So tomorrow I'm catching my flight to BWI (from CT) to head to USNA for the cvw, and I'm so pumped! Any suggestions on what to bring? I read in other posts that workout clothes are a must, and nice casual clothes for the day. I also read that its alright to bring the plebe some outside food..is this ok?

    Anything else would be great!

Bring a jacket, and warm work out clothing. Since you're coming from CT that should be obvious, but I saw a couple candidates rocking their dragger's uniform jacket with cargo shorts last CVW because they didn't bring weather appropriate clothing.

For clothes to wear during the day, be sure to look nice. You don't need to be all dressed up in a suit and tie, but be comfortably presentable. Remember you're going to be walking around the Yard all weekend.
Don'ts would include varsity letter jackets (no one cares), Naval Academy attire (yes, we know you want to go here), clothes for other colleges (hey, I thought you wanted to go to USNA), etc.

I'm not sure what they told you re. bedding, but some wings get colder than others at night. I'd suggest a sleeping bag and a decent pillow since the cots you guys sleep on are...lacking.

Bringing food, candy, etc for your plebe is fine and they will appreciate it. If you come to my company, make sure to bring some baked goods for the Operations Officer.

    12fahanap,

Make sure to ask questions -- this is your best opportunity to find out about USNA first hand and make sure it matches you. If you can, try to get perspectives from all classes, as well. While plebe year is long and feels like 2/3 of the time at USNA, you will be spending 3/4 of your time -- not as a plebe!

    Hurricane,

If OPS is doing their job, then he/she doesn't have time to eat baked goods!

Heh. I brought a bunch of brownies for my dragger and his roommates. They appreciated it a lot.

Ditto on asking questions. I knew the "answers" (if you can call some things answers) to most anything I'd be curious about, but asking questions often brings out stories and different viewpoints. Upperclassmen are always a lot of fun to talk to as well. My Plebe and I ate lunch with a couple upperclassmen of his company. He was, naturally, a bit on edge, but they were fantastic to speak with.

Don't get beaten down by the cynics. Hopefully you won't have to be around any of them, but there are folks there with less-than-fantastic attitudes. Probably a bit more prevalent than usual this time of year; hopefully your dragger will be a fairly positive person. But it is there. Even if they don't entirely mean the things they say, some folks do say negative things.

    For women,

    (1) I'd go with slacks vs. skirts for day wear. You're there to see what life's like, not become someone's GF.

    (2) Also, flat or near flat shoes. You'll be walking on pavers (like cobblestones) and climbing up and down steps all day. Skip the fashion shoes and go with something practical and comfortable.

    (3) Go easy on the makeup. (See #1 above). It's always ok to look like a woman but don't pile on the mascara and cologne and eyeshadow and lipstick.

Bring a swim suit. All plebes (except those that validated) are in swimming this semester. So you might end up going to company swim EI with your plebe or something.

Also, bring a book or homework. The professional topic this week is very long so friday afternoon might be spent studying. Weekend doesn't really start til after the pro quiz.

Don't chop. Don't do chow calls. Don't tell on your plebe. Don't wear a jrotc/cap/whatever uniform. Don't whine about being called a 'drag'. Do utilize the back of your seat at meals. Do at least try and act interested even if you really aren't.

Don't listen to the people who tell you not to come here.

Be mentally prepared for your plebe and roommates to possibly " let their hair down " by discussing and listing all the ugly sides of plebe year after another long day....it's a very, very tough experience for most but it does get better and most plebes realize that....but this semester is called the "Dark Ages" for a good reason. Besides asking questions....be a good and respectful listener .
When my Firstie was a drag during his CVW he heard lot's of complaining about how tough it was from the 3 plebes sharing a room....he listened and it may have prepared him a little better for Plebe Summer and year.

Awesome! Thank you. I'm from southern CA and the only cold gear I have is for snowboarding. Wasn't sure how I'm supposed to dress in 40 degree weather unless it involves snow pants, gloves, and layered sweatshirts.
