Hi all! A month or two ago I received an invitation to attend a CVW and gladly accepted. To my understanding CVW invites for the most part are sent out to candidates that USNA deems competitive. A few weeks later, I received a phone call from a Lieutenant reminding me to get a recommendation ASAP as he said I was on the verge of receiving an LOA due to the strength of my file. A few days ago, a good buddy of mine got an LOA much to the surprise of himself and his family. I couldn't help but feel happy for him as he was absolutely ecstatic! I asked him if he was going for a CVW but he knew nothing of it which I found strange. After hearing news of his LOA, I anticipated receiving notification of one each day upon coming home, however, nothing from the academy. I know that the vast majority of USNA mids never receive LOA's and this is the norm, the appointment is most important. I was just surprised not to have not heard from the academy after the CVW invite and the phone call. I also understand that attending a CVW neither helps nor hurts your file. At the moment, the only component of my application missing is the CFA and a nom the latter of which I'm stressing out about!...haha I was just looking for any insight from this extremely helpful community regarding this situation. Could I still receive an LOA or have they all gone out at this point? I understand that they can give you an advantage in the nomination process and I happen to live in an extremely competitive area. Looking forward to hear what you guys have to say about this!

LOA vs CVW

My son attended the summer session in 2008 received an LOA in Sept. of that year and received his appointment package in Nov. He did not receive a CVW until weeks after he received his LOA. So that would seem to be consistent with your buddys experience, I dont think there is always an exact science to this process. By the way my son was in close contact with his Blue and Gold Officer during the process and at one point told us that the B&G officer led him to believe that good news was coming back in Sept right before he received his LOA. Have patience, easy for me to say, and good luck.

CVW

Yankee,
My daughter received an LOA and never received a CVW.
Maybe one will come in the weeks ahead, but I would not gauge this as a definate either way.

Yankee, I would get your CFA in, that may be all that's holding up your LOA. As everyone has stated, including yourself, the majority of appointments are given to candidates without LOA's, but if an LOA can help you to get a Nom, in a competitive area, I would have your package 100% complete as soon as possible to increase your chances for that LOA.

To answer your question, I think the cvw's are offered to different individuals for a host of different reasons, and not tied to LOA's.

I was initially wait listed to Summer Seminar in 2009 and USNA asked me if I wanted to go to CVW just in case I didnt get into the Summer Seminar. I went to the CVW, then a month later got admitted to NASS. :shake:

Also, CVWs are a good advertising source to keep a diverse amount of candidates interested in USNA. My buddy still hasn't applied to the Academy yet, (which isn't good) and he got offered a CVW. He is not a very strong candidate, but regardless, the Academy offers CVWs to keep all candidates interested.

LOAs are not tied to CVWs nor is the reverse true. You can get an LOA and not a CVW; you can get a CVW and not an LOA. If you really want a CVW, ask your Regional Director. There aren't enough to go around, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I've seen LOAs as late as early Jan., but it could vary from year to year. They don't "advertise" how many LOAs go out, when they go out, etc. -- not even to BGOs. Sorry.
