CVW

Daughter had LOA and no NASS or CVW. Asked BGO to get her a CVW and got one. Talk to your BGO, they can do amazing things! We met with Admissions while she was lost in Mother B.

A CVW invite doesn't mean anything as it relates to getting an appointment (speaking from personal experience), so don;t get your hopes up. The only thing it guarantees is that you will get to spend a weekend visiting the USNA to see what life is really like.

While it doesn't count towards your WCS, does receiving an invite for a CVW guarantee that you will receive a candidate number or can you still be weeded out in this early stage despite being invited to CVW?

"CVW is offered by invitation only throughout the academic year. Invitations are largely based on the level of completion of your application."

If you receive an invite to CVW because you have started your application, it means you are a candidate and at this stage you look competitive. It does not guarantee anything past that. Take advantage of the CVW and complete your application to make yourself as competitive as possible.

I filled out the preliminary application near the end of August and got a CVW invite a couple hours later (if I remember correctly). Either that or the next day. A was a bit surprised because my SAT scores at the time were not that great, but my class rank was really good. Probably doesnt mean anything but hey.

I have confirmed my CVW to the Naval Academy.
Any pointers on how I should address My Midshipmen host???

Be normal, they're only a couple years older than you. Show respect and you'll be fine; have fun!

@navymomwannabe - I was under the impression that attending NASS did, in fact, increase your WCS. I could very easily be mistaken as I don't remember getting that information from a concrete source. However, even if attending NASS does not increase your WCS, your squad leader, a midshipman two years your senior, will fill out an assessment on you at the end of the seminar. Granted, this could hurt you, but NASS definitely should not be written off as something that won't buff up your application. I never went to Boys State, but, if I had to guess, I'd say that NASS would be a better time investment.

navymomwannabe is absolutely correct. Attending NASS does not add to your WCS. Whether it's a better investment of your time is open to debate and will vary with the individual.

I'm truly not in a position to take a stance either way but will relay that I was directly informed by a former Senior Officer of Admissions that a NASS review report is part of your application package when presented to the board on a Thursday, and can help or harm ones person during the process. I'm informed the WCS/WPS is a set "quasi secret formula" that does not account for NASS, but the NASS review report will confirm or question what they are trying to picture if they so choose to utilize it and look.

DS was specifically told at the very end of his Summer Seminar last June that his SS evaluation (in addition to his SS CFA) would be a significant part of his Admissions's Board evaluation process along with any Certificates of Achievement awarded.

I think ideally, you should try to go to NASS and boys/girls state. That way you get the best of both worlds. But from strictly a "point" standpoint, boys state is a better choice. I am sure there are benefits to NASS....lots of them. Not the least of which is the experience.

Correct - Both help!
I wouldn't think that passing on one or the other should be a problem. Boy's State lasts one week in June while NASS offers three different week-long sessions in June.
Honestly, DS's main problem was rationalizing in his own mind missing two weeks of varsity football camp. Worked out fine - great season.
Just specify non-Boy's State weeks as your first and second NASS choices. They should work with you on this if you get your application in early enough and you are approved. That's what Admissions told us at least.
