So I've turned into a softie in my old age. There I said it.

This morning on the way into work I was reflecting on the idea that in just seven, all too short, days my precious daughter heads off to begin her new life at AFA. Telling myself I was bored with the radio station, but really just looking to distract myself from thoughts of her leaving, I hit the up button. As luck (?) would have it, the tuner stops on the very next station just as a new song is beginning....

The crowd noise of a live recording can be heard behind Stevie Nick's voice saying "This one's for you, Daddy" as the acoustic guitar hauntingly offers up the opening notes of Landslide. Damn it! An emotional song at the best of times, today it was just... ... ... (clears throat)

Anyways, to stop this grumbly old bear embarassing himself even more, I will simply say I'm incredibly proud of both of my children growing older, changing, and serving something greater than themselves. And of all of the other children growing bolder and heading off to their lives.

    Congrats to all of you.

    MedB,

I would not consider it a moment of weakness, at all. In fact your DS is doing something, not a lot of young people want to do, for one reason or another. My hat is off to your DS and family. Tell her I say thank you, for wanting to defend the freedom of the greatest country in the world the United States of America.

    God Bless and God Speed,

    RGK

Hey. My kid has been at it in NROTC for 3 years. The final year begins in 8 weeks. I have moments like that all the time. I hate it when USMC commercials come on.

And my son starts his NROTC journey in 8 weeks....and I know I will have lots of moments like this and I'm actually ok with that. I think pride leaking out of my eyes is a good thing. :)

Great post!! But don't think it'll be the last time - I'm kinda feeling the same way as my DD (USAFA 2014) prepares to report to her first base today.

Hope your DD is doing well at BCT! (I'm sure she's looking forward to next week!)

Thanks, all! We got a surprise phonecall last night as DD's team earned a special reward for finishing all the LRC stations successfully. Damn kid was all smiles and actually digging BCT... go figure! :shake:

Congrats ElSib! Bet you are proud as hell.

No matter where they are in the ROTC/SA process, seems like all these amazing young people continue to face challenges and firsts that make them stronger... though I do sometimes wonder if they succeed just spite their parents?

    MedB,
Congrats on the phone call! I know they are few and far between.

    phone call

MedB - if you are on the facebook page for 2018 parents, one of the dads asked if you received a phone call during Jack's from your basic to please message him. Evidently his firstie was one of the cadre who allowed basics to call home and he got reamed for it.

    Hi 2018Mom,

Thanks for heads up. Seems like a lot of drama over what appears to be good leadership. Don't want to bring that all here, but my personal opinion is simply that leadership takes courage.

I am a softie also. DD graduated at USNA 2011. I cried while I pinned her 2LT bars on her marine uniform. DS graduated and was Commissioned an Ensign in the Sealift Command on the deck of the Constitution in Boston Harbor. I cried again as we changed Covers and Shoulder Boards. One more to go.:thumb:

I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's not happening as much as it was, but I still choke up a bit every once in a while. So darn proud of the kid!!

Not a moment of weakness. Instead, it was a moment of parenting! Nothing like this roller coaster ride of emotions: pride, fear, sadness, happiness, anxiety, worry, joy, confusion...and then it starts all over again! Hang in there!

You want to know a moment of weakness. Try walking your daughter down the Annapolis Chapel aisle last Saturday for her wedding with a Marine 1st LT Pilot. I thought I would die or fall over. I made it all the way. Both USNSA Graduates and met at TBS Quantico.

Congratulations to you, your family and the newlyweds!

Can't really remember TBS being a great place for romance. But glad to hear that they made it work.

    Congrats!

I know the feeling. When we got the pics back you'd think I wasn't happy about him getting married BC I wasn't smiling. In reality I was trying to hold back my tears of joy for him and his beautiful bride.

I don't even want to think about how hard it will be for me to control the tears when our only DD gets married.

    Congratulations to your family AF6872!

And remember to tell that young LT that father-in-laws are "sir" regardless of rank.

    Awesome! Congratulations.

Got to admit I'm a slight bit jealous. I've got boys only so I never will experience what you were feeling.
