Not sure about level of experience and joining debate at USNA. As far as compatibility with a varsity sport... It depends on the sport, but for the most part, no. Varsity sports especially in season take up an incredible amount of time. Some extra curriculars occur on days when there is no drill or intramurals and others occur around study period. Well as an athlete you will have practice nearly everyday and you need to the study period to do just that. Also probably most debate events occur on weekends. Guess what? You will have practice or games/meets most weekends. Coaches aren't going to say go to debate practice instead, just not how D1 sports work.
