If you are within driving distance of Chicago and considering the Coast Guard Academy you may wish to take advantage of this opportunity. The United States Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw,“Chicago’s Christmas Ship,” will arrive on Friday December 3 at Navy Pier loaded with Christmas Trees destined for more than 1,200 inner city families. On Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 at 10 a.m. near the “Captain at the Helm” statue south of the Navy Pier entrance there will be a formal welcoming ceremony and a memorial wreath laying ceremony commemorating the Merchant Marine officers lost on the Great Lakes and a fly-over by a Coast Guard helicopter carrying a memorial wreath to be placed on the waves near the Chicago lighthouse.

Guest speakers include: Rear Admiral Michael N. Parks, Commander, Ninth Coast Guard District; Commander Scott Smith, Commanding Officer,of the Cutter Mackinaw and Commander Robert E. Bailey, Jr., USCG, Commanding Officer, Marine Safety Unit Chicago.

Public Tours of the Cutter Mackinaw will be provided on Saturday December 4, 2010 from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM and an Academy Admissions Partner will be on hand in the ship's galley with a display and academy literature.

The USCGC Mackinaw expects to depart Chicago on Sunday, December 5, 2010. Navy Pier is located at 600 East Grand Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. Go to the web site for more information http://christmasship.org/
