Yes they do. They had classes on Veteran's day as well.
They will however, have President's day off.
But the poor plebes must use two days of their spring break for plebe parent weekend.

West Point is adjusting their calendar to accommodate a 12 week summer. They want to get in as much military training as possible in their 47 month program. Unfortunately, it means that the Corps gets very few three day weekends.

Sorry, off topic a bit...but I just have to comment on flymom...What cute eyes you have!?

Ha! Thanks, Salj, those are official USAFA BCG's!

Hornet: please have mercy on those look-a-likes! They've not been down any mountains on skis in ages. Also, you can report any bad behavior right back here. I'll spank their fencer behinds, even from way over here.

BCG's - hilarious.

Here's my question regarding federal holidays which is way off topic: why does MLK get a whole day to himself but the presidents have to share? MLK day should be Civil Rights day or something like that. OK, enough of that.

I thought they had their own days and put them both to one day....until I read this....

Origins of the Monday Holiday
In 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act, which moved the official observance of Washington's birthday from Feb. 22 to the third Monday in February. Some reformers had wanted to change the name of the holiday as well, to Presidents' Day, in honor of both Lincoln and Washington, but that proposal was rejected by Congress, and the holiday remained officially Washington's Birthday.

Nevertheless, there was a popular misconception that the day had been officially renamed, a misconception only reinforced by the fact that the third Monday in February can only occur between Feb. 15 and Feb. 21. This means that the holiday is always after Lincoln's birthday and before Washington's birthday, without ever coinciding with either. Furthermore, some states which had previously celebrated Lincoln's Birthday dropped the observance after the federal holiday reforms, supporting the notion that the two presidential birthdays had been combined.

While the name change has never been authorized by Congress, it has gained a strong hold on the public consciousness, and is generally used on calendars, in advertising, and even by many government agencies. There have been attempts to introduce legislation requiring federal agencies to call the day Washington's Birthday, but these have never gotten very far. No matter what's in the law books, the popular usage is now well established.

The holiday you call "President's Day" is not an official US Govt holiday.

The Federal holiday on February 16th (this year) is officially and lawfully known as George Washington's Birthday.

Each individual state can do as they wish, and choose to honor both Lincoln and Washington together and call it "President's Day," but not the US Govt.

"Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is Federal policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law."

I think that Robert E. Lee day (or maybe it was called Lee-Jackson Day) in Virginia was also celebrated around this time too.

------------

Here the wiki info regarding that:

The birthday of Robert E. Lee is celebrated or commemorated in:

The state of Virginia as part of Lee-Jackson Day, which was separated from the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday there in 2001. The King holiday falls on the third Monday in January while the Lee-Jackson Day holiday is celebrated on the Friday preceding it.
The state of Texas celebrates, as part of Confederate Heroes Day on January 19, Lee's actual birthday.
The states of Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi on the third Monday in January, along with Martin Luther King, Jr.
The state of Georgia on the day after Thanksgiving.
The state of Florida, as a legal holiday and public holiday, on January 19.[48]

fencermother; yea; I got the boy. Matter of fact, we just walked in the door. Being this thread has evolved and revolved a lot around passes and such; my son wouldn't have used up 3 or 4 passes for this weekend if he hadn't received extras because of school. As already mentioned, they only get initially 5 for the half of semester. A 3 day weekend can use up most of that. It is nice however being only a couple hours away. He will probably come home again next month for presidents day 3 day weekend. After that, he's pretty well busy with school, training, and prepping for spring training. We won't see him until spring break.

In the fall semester, he never came home except for thanksgiving and christmas. We still got to see him every other weekend or so when we went down to see a football game. But that's obviously his busy time of the year. Even his weekends are pretty much used up. He uses weekends for homework and studying.

Air Force might be different than army and navy in how many passes; uniforms; rules; etc.... But then again; so what? The 3 academies are nothing alike each other. They shouldn't be compared. Hopefully no one on this forum is going to base their decision on which academy to attend; even partially; on which one has more day passes, 3 day weekends, when they wear civilian clothes; etc... If they are looking at that, I think their priorities are definitely out of sorts. But; for what it's worth; this IS AN AIR FORCE FORUM!!! As such; I am ALLOWED to say that the Air Force Academy is BETTER than any other academy. And because they are better, we're allowed to treat our cadets with more responsibilities and privileges. Mike....
