Defer decision?

My DS got an e-mail from his regional admissions director stating that they are deferring a decision on his file until they get his first semester grades. First time around (DS - currently a youngster) - we didn't hear a word from admissions until he got his BFE. Any thoughts on if this is a good sign or bad one? He has two nominations and file has been complete for quite some time.

My DS has been told the exact same thing! In my research, I was told that it likely means there is something lacking academically, either test scores or they want to see how they pulled through on the classes they indicated they were taking. Ie..Calculus or Physics. Usually because their Jr. year scores aren't quite what they need to be for a direct BFE. It's not great but it's not terribly bad either. I think it comes down to how competitive it gets there at the end. Ugh...this part is hard!

Weighing in from the not too distant past.

We've had two at the Academy. First son was golden - had everything locked up by January 1.

Second son had pretty good ACT (29) and decent GPA (3.75) with lowest grades in math.

Received the "Deferred" notice with a request for first semester grades.

Had a happy ending but everything went down to the wire (April 12).

I'd say your son is "on the bubble" right now in the initial review process and even if everything goes well, I wouldn't look for good news until April.

No TWE yet so still in the game is the good news! Is your DS in a class like Calculus, Physics or Chemistry? I would venture to say that they are waiting to see how he does in something like those classes before making a decision.

I didn't think anyone would receive a TWE already. Was looking for those updates at least after the new year but more likely March/April?? TWE's as early as February?? Not sure how that works.

I agree that this is probably about making sure he is doing okay in Physics. He is from a very (probably inconceivably to most of you) small school, with "meh" ACT scores. But he is pretty much on par with DS that got into NAPS and then the Academy and is doing very well. We just didn't get this kind of notice the first time around so I thought it was interesting but wasn't quite sure what to read into it, if anything.

Haven't seen TWEs this early and wouldn't expect any this early. Just a general statement.

Historically, The vast majority of TWE's will go out in late March or early April - Even though preliminary decisions will have been made on many candidates much earlier.

It never seems that the mail room at Annapolis goes into overdrive until all issues are resolved regarding the National Pool.

Hang in there. It may be a long wait either way. We were spoiled after our experience with our first son, relieved when we got the late BFE on our second son but also knew a lot of disappointed folks who didn't get the nod.

Asking for first semester grades seems to be a more common practice in recent years. If the grades are good, especially if an upward trend, it obviously will help. The converse is also true.

First TWEs generally go out in late February for those who have not completed their packages. The next group are those 100% complete with no noms. As noted above, those who are 100% complete with at least one nom won't typically see TWEs until late March or even April 15.
