DD was just notified that her EA application has been deferred to regular admissions. Already has DoDMERB qualification and nomination. Awesome extracurriculars, good grades with lots of AP and honors classes, okay SAT/ACT.

    1. Does anyone know the percent of deferred EA applicants that are ultimately appointed in regular admissions? I realize 50% of the class is filled in RA but not sure what % of the 50% are deferrals vs. first timers, or for that matter how many deferrals there are.

    2. Any suggestions on how to interpret this decision? (i.e., is AFA saying we like you but want to see if someone better comes along? If we don't appoint you, you have an excellent chance at a Prep School slot because we almost took you and you applied EA? We don't have the heart to say no during the holiday season <subtle sarcasm> so we'll string you along until March and then say no?, etc)??

    3. Any advice on what do to while waiting? Retake ACT's, CFA or just continue to perfect fingernail biting skills in the hopes it will be recognized as an Olympic sport? I've read that it is good to retake the ACT's but also read that the increase has to be quite substantial in order to make a difference.

The increase does not have to be quite substantial. They have cut-offs. If their cut-off is a 26 in Math, and she scored a 25, they will not give her an appointment. I know this from experience with my son. He was low on one of the subjects and they said he needed it to be at least a certAin number. The next time he took the ACT, he surpassed that number and he got an LOA within days of them recieving the score from the testing service.

This is the first year that USAFA has used EA so only the Admissions Staff (and perhaps ALOs) would know what the plan is but there is no data from past years.

I got this today also. Sounds like most EA applicants get this. I am not worried in the least. We are at no disadvantage, as most people qualify for regular selection, so the fact that we met the deadline only shows that we are dedicated and that we work harder. Generalizations I realize, but it still holds some truth.

My DS got same notification of deferral today. He had application done sometime the week before 11/1 deadline. Not overly discouraged by it, for reasons already mentioned here. The extra months of waiting are gonna be tough though.

How were you all notified of this? Was it on the portal or were you contacted by someone? I haven't received any new notifications but I turned in my EA application over a week before the deadline.

It was on the portal in the messages portion. Check it tomorrow. Hopefully the fact that you haven't heard means you have an appointment letter in the mail!

DS hasn't heard anything either. Should we be cautiously optimistic?

Although we are still praying @ the Dodmerb waiver...

Or does this mean a TWE is on the way.... My son has not heard anything at this point. Just not sure that is good news or bad news.

My thought is if you are deferred at least that means you are still in the running. Just not getting an answer at this time. This is the same way many colleges go about admissions. From what many have posted, the EA is mainly for athletes and the very top level Academically so I'd assume most who were competitive would get the Deferral.

But that is just my thoughts. I guess time will tell.

    deferred is a good thing

DS received a deferring letter. clarified with admissions officer that this is a good thing and will go to the March selection group. It is a waiting game now. Updates are allowed for good things and hopefully no bad things.

I have a feeling they would just tell you on the portal if you got a TWE, but I could be wrong. Stupid question, but I have not yet been told what TWE stands for. Obviously it is a declining of appointment, but what does it stand for?

Don't be discouraged either way. I have a hard time believing that they would completely rule out a candidate they deemed competitive enough for EA and not compare them to the rest of the pool yet. LOAs and early acceptances are for those candidates that are literally super heroes and probably run off of hooah power and sunlight- for the rest of us, well, we get to wait!
Keep in mind that most candidates before you went through the same waiting process, and we all survived. Also know that a TWE isn't the end of the world- this is coming from someone who has received one before. I'm positive you are all great candidates and will find success if you really shoot for it no matter where you go. Hope for the best, but know that your worth is not based on that appointment. :thumb:

Like Haleym. our DS received the dreaded TWE, then a Falcon letter, then a year of prep school, and then an appointment. This can be a reeeeeeeealy long process. Sorry, I know that's not the news you want to hear. But it's the truth. Very few candidates hear anything early.

The first time around, the mailbox and portal were checked way too often in anticipation of news that came very late. On the second time around, our family just resigned ourselves that we would hear something by May 1. Sure enough he received his appointment first week of April since in 2012 the Falcon Scholars received their appointments pretty much last. Each year seems to be slightly different but the common theme seems to be a long wait for most.

Blackbird, I'm confused by something. Did your DS receive the Falcon and Prep school offers the same year that the TWE was received or were they the result of reapplying the following year? I didn't think there was life after TWE in the same academic year.
