I just got accepted into the Citadel, but due to recent unexpected circumstances, I feel morally obligated to update the Citadel on my discipline record in high school. The circumstances essentially stemmed from me trying to do the right thing but getting dragged down by overzealous school policy. If I had an opportunity to explain to an admissions officer face to face I believe that they would agree with me, but due to distance that would be difficult to do anytime before Christmas break, and the website says to "update immediately".. How should I go about this update? Is it a deal breaker? As in will my acceptance be reevaluated or rejected? Looking for insight..

You provided no details about what happen so it is really hard for anyone to give you advice, that said you should talk to your Guidance office and see if this infraction will be reflected on your academic record. The practical matter is that if this infraction is on your record and shows in your transcript, the colleges will see it on your record. On a personal level, you might feel compelled to discuss it with the school, that is entirely up to you and no one can really advise you on that. Good luck.

my apoligies, I got an out of school suspension, for stepping in when kids on my teams were using drugs (im captain) but since i physically touched the drugs if only for a second, my school said it had to suspend me for possession. (not my drugs/paraphanalia nor did i use). It wont be sent to colleges but there will be excused absences on my disciplinary record.

Clarifying: Did you mean to say there would be UNexcused absences on your attendance record?

No actually, my school gives excused absences for suspension. Similar to a sick day with a parent or doctors note.

If its not on your academic record, why include it? Your school obviously doesn't think colleges should know about it, otherwise they would've put it on your record.

This should NOT be a problem (MHO only). I would think you could accurately relate this via phone. I would recommend calling admissions. Of course the other way is to simply fight the suspension but it's probably too late for that. I can't believe this would be a problem but as you say, morally there is an obligation to report it. If the phone call happens after the Thanksgiving break then so be it. Just reach them by phone as soon as you can.

I'd have to know more details, but I believe you are NOT required to bring this to anyone's attention. If you did the right thing, then let this one ride... just my 2 cents.

IMHO- you don't have a responsibility to tell them. If you got arrested then perhaps a different story but as you have relayed it- you are ok as it is.

You're told to update immediately and you have something to update. Sounds like you have an update to me. What does your moral compass tell you? (I would suspect you feel you should update it, hence you asked).

The rest of us may want to recalibrate our compasses though.

alex I respect your honesty, better to be upfront with people than appear to be hiding anything negative. Honesty is the best policy and no one will ever penalize you for it, if anything it will probably be a plus with the admissions staff because this is the kind of moral values we want in our cadets.

    Alex,
From what I've heard, it sounds like your high school discipline record was not impacted through these events. In fact, in your description of events it sounds like you did the right thing. If your moral compass is compelling you to pass it along, then follow your convictions. However, on the surface it sounds like you have no obligation or reason to discuss the matter further with anyone in admissions at any school. You are not required to discuss further...
My advice for you is to speak about the matter further with your parents or members of your family.
In the end, follow your heart but use your head... you'll make the right call.
