My son got nominations this past week to USMA and USNA. What is the protocol for thanking the Congressman ? Or should we ? Did you thank the person ?

Well, nominations are part of their jobs (which came about because they passed a bill requiring them to provide nominatons). I don't think it's expected, but I don't see any issue with sending a letter. It will likely drop into an abyss of staffers, but you sent one. I don't think you need to call, but I don't think it will destroy you either.

    Do whatever you'd like.

My DS wrote thank you notes to each MOC he interviewed with, thanking each for the opportunity to interview, and in one case personally meeting the MOC. One was sent before the nomination was received; another was sent after the nomination was received (nom was received 2 days after the interview).

A thank you note is always a positive IMHO.

These are our future leaders. As such, they will have to learn social/business/military etiquette needed to succeed.

Both of my children were required to send hand-written thank you notes to every teacher/counselor/etc that wrote an evaluation, every coach/instructor who conducted a CFA/PF exam, and every MOC's office.

We told them it's the least they could do for the help they were given and the opportunity that's been provided. They agreed.

I sent thank yous to the MOC and the board members. I even got a few replies. I think its a good thing to do. Granted I'm in ND where it's a lot easier to communicate with the MOC, due to less constituents.

Last year my Congressman held an event to recognize and meet each of his nominees, so I was able to thank him in person there instead of writing a letter.

I received a "thank you" letter from a candidate I interviewed for my MOC...it was a surprise but greatly appreciated.

I think it's a very nice thing to do.

I thanked my MOC when he nominated me...twice.

I agree that sending hand written thank yous is a good idea, but how does one write to individual nomination board members? My DD does not have any contact information for them and doesn't even know all of their names. Is it acceptable to send the note to the whole committee at the MOC's office?

Sounds like that's the only alternative you have, so I think it would be considered acceptable.

That is exactly what my DD and DS did. Quite acceptable; in fact still a step above what most young people today do. So no worries.

I sent my MOC a thank you letter today. I did not have the contact information of anyone on the interview committee (I only remember the last name and rank of one woman on the board), so I extended my gratitude to the committee as a whole in my letter, along with my thanks to the MOC, himself.
