Or questions about the program in general. I am an Ensign at the Strategic Sealift Officers Program (formerly Merchant Marine Inactive Ready Reserve Group) and am here to answer your Navy or military questions. The program has changed a lot in the past year and is still changing. Whether you're an applicant or a member of the class of 2012 getting ready to graduate feel free to ask anything.

My DS has been offered an appointment for the class of 2016. You say the program has changed a lot and is still changing... can you elaborate on those changes?

The changes concern more the current members and those getting ready to graduate. New to the program is getting a yearly navy physical before being allowed on orders. Next fiscal year we'll be requiring everyone to get PRTs (sit ups, pushups, and the run). Military Sealift Command is now our program's sponsor and we have adjusted our mission to support them more.

It was actually the Merchant Marine individual Ready Reserve Group. The SSOP is still part of the IRR which is in the Active Reserve.
