Graduation high school in 2018
I have a question regarding medical waivers and the application process. I love West Point but the acceptance dates are nerve wracking. As I am a recruited athlete, I have some other colleges as possibilities to fall back on, if West Point doesn't work out for some reason. The only problem is that the dates they would require me to commit are much sooner that the usual acceptance, usually before nominations are even finished. Now, when I start my application process, Il have to do the DODMERB. I have technically been diagnosed with asthma, and have been on refill prescriptions until 14 or 15 years of age butI have never had an asthma attack, so I never used them. They were just in case. I am a swimmer, and we do extremely taxing workouts, and I have been practicing 8+ times per week for the past couple years, without a breathing problem. My question is, if I am lucky enough to get a LOA (I have a 34 act unsuperscored), but they fail me on the DODMERB, would I be able to find out about a medical waiver before I would have to commit to any other schools (early November at the latest)? Thanks in advance
Edit: I reread and my question wasn't very clear. What I am trying to ask is,
when are DODMERB results generally in, and how long do waivers usually take?

Nobody here is a medical doctor and if one is here they would not be able to give you an absolute answer just based on a forum. There is no control over DoDmerb. This is why it's important to have a Plan B. It's seems like you do have a Plan B in the works and I think that is smart. You stated how much you want to attend WP. Set your emotions aside and now look at your very narrow time frames to meet your goals. I would suggest to continue with your goals to WP but set limits and work on Plan B at the same time. If it works out, it works out. Best of luck to you

The DODMerb process typically starts when your application is 50% complete. In you case, with a history of Asthma and prescribed an inhaler you will most likely be DQ and then require a waiver. The waiver process can take weeks to months. A lot depends on how bad the SA wants you.

If I read this correctly you are graduating in 2018, so you are a HS junior and you need to commit by November of your junior year?
(if it is November of your senior year, you could get your application in early and get the application, DODMerb, and waiver process done by Nov especially if the SA coach is working the process). But back to committing your junior year in HS. The best advice would be to talk to the coach, let them know that you will most likely be DQ for asthma. See what they say, see what they are willing to commit to, what will they guarantee and make an informed decision.

Thank you very much. I would have to commit by November senior year at the latest, I'm just trying to get ahead and make a plan.

It is always best to plan early. Just get your application in as early as possible and you should be fine. Also, consider attending Boys State the summer between HS Junior and Senior year. It is a big boost to your leadership score at any SA. http://www.legion.org/boysnation
