We have heard it is best to purchase the printer for your mid from the midstore, since they will also carry the ink cartridges they will need throughout the year. Does anyone know what printer that is?

When I was at the Midstore a couple of weeks ago they had several large stacks of the HP Photosmart C4780 for $99.95. There is no tax at the Midstore. You can find the printers cheaper online. We are going to wait to purchase the printer until PPW or after. We want to see what our DS wants to do. Some people have said that the plebes don't want to have to lug it around when they move in to their room for the Academic year and they also suggest that the plebes may want to share one per room.

DS, now a firstie, told his little bro, a plebe, to buy his own and to just get the one from the mid store, since the ink was so easy to obtain. He said that while you can share, having more than one printer in the room comes in handy when a paper's due and your printer doesn't want to work.

I agree with Supportivemom. Can you imagine the logistical problems with sharing a printer? (You used all the ink and didn't replace it. Hey, did you break the printer? Did you use the last piece of printer paper? When are you going to be finished, I have to print out my paper, too?! ...) Yes, I know they have to learn to work together, but DS is nervous enough about ac year without having to worry about who should replace the printer ink this time. Anway, we have decided to look at the printer at the midstore, then order it online and have it sent directly to son's new room before ac year. That way he will have the exact one so he can get ink easily and not have to lug it to his new room with all his gear.

Printer

I spoke with a gentleman in the Midstore and he said most mids end up buying their own printer before the year is out because of the reasons mentioned earlier. I think when the printers were bigger and more expensive it was a good idea to share, but now they are small and relatively inexpensive. Also, if you order online, you might want to order and extra ink cartridge or two and that way your mid is good to go!

Do not share a printer - it is a pain.

No need to limit your choice to Mid Store one and only. Get the printer that you want not one that the Mid Store thinks you want. I got mine at O..D.. I bought with an extra set of ink - when I changed out the cartridge I ordered new ink on line. Never ran out of ink at a critical time - which can even happen with Mid Store purchase since it closes at 4pm and is not open on the weekend (unless it is a football we and then you will have SMT in the morning, and off to March On and no time to run to the Mid Store.)

Get a printer that is all in one - scanner, copier (fax not needed) and printer. Coping and scanning will come in very handy

Thanks for all the input! Sounds like we will wait like others have suggested and have it shipped. I also like the idea of stocking up with ink cartridges to have them on hand. Counting down the days until PPW!!!!

Make sure you wait to get his new PO box. Or send It to the express office. Sending I directly to his new room or his plebe summer address wont work. Get the same one as in the mid store or cheaper. Its a huge pain sharing the printer.

Thanks for the tip, mademe, will do.

A mom of facebook said there is a note somewhere in the PPW packet that states plebes must get their printers at the mid store. She said it states this in bold letters. I can't find that anywhere. Has anyone here seen anything like that? If so, where?

I don't remember seeing anything about a mandatory purchase, but purchasing at the mid store makes sense for a lot of reasons. If anything is wrong with the printer, the place where you purchased it is right there. Also, and most important from my perspective, proceeds from mid store sales go to support the Brigade - worth it in my book compared to saving a few bucks ordering it online. That's not to say that I don't appreciate the circumstances of those less financially equipped than our family.

Get the printer that most meets the needs of your Plebe - let them decide what printer they want after all they are the ones who have to use it.

I will echo Current Mid - scanner, printer and copier all in one. Actually my Plebe rarely printed anything academic on his printer but chose to use the laser printers that can be found on the yard. I know his company had one but it may have been off limits to Plebes. When he brought it home this spring he said he was not sure if the printer portion even worked as he had not actually used it to print in over two years but used it a lot to scan.

The lady, who thought she read the Plebes must by printer from Mid store, misread. I suspected that was the case.
