My daughter is applying for a four-year Army ROTC scholarship. Does the fact that she has four years of Navy JROTC in high school and has risen to the Administrative Officer and Commander of the Academic team help? She has the grades and test scores to get into her three chosen colleges.

We were going to visit each of the ROTC units at her three college choices. Will that help?

In terms of getting the scholarship?

I believe it counts for a few points, but I'm not sure. Your best bet is to wait for some of the more experienced members like Marist and Clarkson to roll around to tell you exactly how that works.

In terms of succeeding once she's earned the scholarship?

Going by personal experience, very helpful. Our former Navy JROTC Cadets are known for being very squared away. The basic military skills, values, and norms engrained during JROTC translate well across service lines, even if the terminology and context differs, your daughter's involvement in Navy JROTC will pay dividends.

JROTC helps most when it is part of the picture and not the whole enchilada.

To maximize your leadership score on the interview you will need to have held 2 separate leadership positions. Only 1 of these can be JROTC.

To maximize your athletics score on the interview you will need to have 2 varsity letters or equivalent athletic experience in a community or regional league. JROTC "sports" such as Drill team and "Raiders" do not count.

Once you join ROTC, JROTC experience will give you a slight edge on your peers for about 6 months. After that it fades away as new Cadets learn D&C and land navigation skills.
