Quote from a major re R-day while on a recent admissions tour.

Good tip! My son has not yet bought Beast supplies (I see that there is a very good thread on that and will check it out), but for those who have, would a backpack suffice? Or a duffel bag?

My Firstie used a medium-sized Under Armour duffle bag. He did not take that much, just the things on the Beast packing list. Remember, you have to lug around everything you take and their civilian bag will be piled somewhere with everyone else's stuff until Beast is over.

Cadet son brought small gym sports duffel with approved items from packing list in gallon ziplock bags inside, for easier transfer to the bag he was given.
Don't bring anything extra. Take a look at "box boy" from a couple of years ago at Air Force.
