I thought that I would pass on this information from Barbara Gutierrez who is the Parent Liason for USAFA:

    Subject: Doolie Day "In"

There's a change in the schedule for the Doolies this year. Doolie Day "In" will be on 10 July. However, they will not be leaving the campus and going to sponsors' homes. They will participate in Field Day, which is athletics, in the morning, and in the afternoon they will go to Arnold Hall for Doolie Day In. They'll have access to phones to call their families at that time. I'm told the local parents will not be allowed to speak to the Doolies during "Field Day" nor will they be allowed in Arnold Hall. There are other activities going on around this time frame, which is why this schedule has been changed. (I don't have specifics, though).

They will march out to Jacks Valley on 11 July and march back on 24 July. BCT graduation is on 31 July. The Acceptance Parade is scheduled for 4 August.

Do they need like phone cards to call long-distance (Texas) ? What if they have their cell phone on I-day and this was taken, will the phone be given back to them on this day ? Maybe some C4Cs can provide some feedback on how they did it last year.

    Thanks.

Last year was the first Doolie Day IN because of the swine flu outbreak. It had been Doolie Day Out up until the day or two before that Saturday. The squadrons returned the Basics' phones to them for DDI, but they also had a set of phone banks set up in Arnold Hall for basics to use.
Sponsors who had kept basics' phones after dropping them off for in-processing also dropped off their phones & goodies at Arnold Hall, but did not get to talk to the basics. Don't know if sponsors will be able to drop stuff off like they did last year, but last year field day was the day before DDI, and DDI was all day til like 1600.
I had sent a phone card with my son to BCT, he kept it in his wallet, and never used it. Hmmm, guess I should ask him where it is

Having your own cell phone to get back for Doolie Day In means the basic has access to all the phone numbers he wants to call (phone numbers that he may not know from memory), text messaging, and what I had mine do - send me a picture of his smiling face with the camera on his cell phone! That was the best picture

That's unfortunate, for sure. My kids had a blast on DD Out.

I'm curious as to why field day is the same day.

What do they do between BCT graduation and A Day? Guess I was under the impression that they were pretty much the same time, not 4 days apart!

    My son's words exactly!

One of the boys he went to Summer Seminar with who lives in Colorado Springs and is also going to USAFA volunteered his parents to be both their sponsors. They already that that day planned out, and are bummed now to just be given a few hours (supervised I'm assuming by upperclass  ) to call home instead. Eh, what can you do? No DDO (or similar) when I went through Beast at WP, and yet somehow we all survived!

I spent 3 1/2 months at Parris Island and got to call home on the Sunday before graduation. I know it sucks, but I managed to survive.

Ooh, we got TWO phone calls during Beast - one per detail. Of course they were in a phone booth, while at attention, with the rest of your squad standing outside and the cadre glaring at you! No relaxed, hour long conversation on cell phones (which didn't exist then - yes, we're old!).

We were given 12 hour base liberty the Sunday before graduation. It started at 6 AM. If you have been to PI you know there is not much to do there. There were phone booths next to the 1st Bn Parade Deck, that was where I headed at 6:01. I remember we were taken to the Credit union to open bank accounts a couple of days before. I asked for a whole bunch of quarters because I knew calling collect was real expensive. After I called my family and girlfriend there was not much more to do. Nothing was open for hours. I went to the PX and bought Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young, still one of my favorite albums, and Led Zeppelin's new album at the time, "In Thru the Out Door". Since there was not much to do, most of us headed back to the squadbay early. We only had two days and a wake up left, we were almost Marines, but the DI's still had their fun with us. If you can remember back that far, there were still Blue Laws on the books and I was in South Carolina. I think the base theater was showing "Battle Cry" or "Sands of Iwo Jima". At that time those movies were abot 30 years old or more.

Sponsor family can't be your own parents (i.e. they live nearby).

I remember my eldest bro calling home after he was out on submarine duty (in the v. early 1960s). It was such a big deal for the family and when it was my turn (7 of 8 kids), his time was up!!!! I didn't get to talk to him for another few months! So disappointed.
