Are double majors at the U.S. Air Force Academy possible? If so, do they have to be related fields? Is it possible to double major in two completely unrelated fields, such as Aeronautical Engineering and English or Economics, for example?

Yes you can double major. For example, there are some who double major in physics and math because thats just a few extra classes.

I never ran the numbers, but I think double majoring in unrelated majors might run up against the maximum hours you could take (I'm thinking multiple 9 class semesters  would be required).

Most cadets are ok with one major, some take two related majors (while the others laugh/feel bad for them), but I've never heard of someone taking unrelated majors.

    What he said.

Though I usually just say, yes it is allowed. Instead of details I say just wait till you're there. I'd say 95%+ of people entering simply cannot handle the work load so giving details prior to entering is not very useful since you have 1-2 semesters to make a double major decision. Focus on getting there, getting through basic, and then experiencing the academics. If you have questions about academics or specific majors, that is far more relevant and useful discussion.

We asked this specific questions at a visit in january and were told double majors in similar areas like physics and math are possible but doing a double major in history and physics is virtually impossible due to required courses and academic load.

Yes, as a double physics and math major I can say it is possible, but not particularly enjoyable. We do it because we all really enjoy both majors but it is no joke and like Hornet said, worry about that after you see what academics are like. I actually have heard of one person doing math and some other unrelated field (not sure what it was, maybe philosophy?) but that is a lot of classes. However, math itself has less classes and is more flexible than most other majors, that is why it is very common to do a double major with math.
