DS just got the call ----- LOA on the way!

I am the DS of grevar. My father and I are just openly excited to have received such an honor. In no way was my father's thread "obnoxious". We are a humble family and this thread's purpose was not to boast. It was simply to show our excitement and on top of that, to show others that LOA's are still being received. I have been reading these threads for months and have never replied to anything. Not to be disrespectful, but I had to reply this time because what you said was out of hand and honestly none of your business. If you find it "obnoxious" and "lacking humility" simply move on to the next thread instead of spending your time putting others down. You're a junior at the Naval Academy? I am positive that you could be spending your time doing something important rather then rudely commenting on a thread which honestly has nothing to do with you.

On a good note. I am honored to have received this LOA. Now I just have to evaluate which one suits me best.:thumb:

Have a nice day.

Leaders tend to be humble about themselves and that is what our military is looking for. There will be a point in one's career where they are selected for promotion, billets, or other opportunities that classmates or peers will not get.

Ah, yes, well this doesn't always describe military officer "leaders." It may be what the military is looking for, but any officer out there knows more than a handful of fellow officers who are anything but humble.

I've been sitting here thinking about how to respond to this comment and honestly I'm glad I waited a bit to think this through. To insinuate a lack of humility is a complete mischaracterization of us. Completely unfair of you in my opinion. Especially coming from someone who appears to be member of the class of 2015.

While my son has worked very hard to get where he is at we all fully recognize that he is simply blessed beyond measure to have reached these goals so early. We know from reading this forum for months that there are many kids so much more qualified than he and some of them end up not getting an appointment to either school let alone both. I certainly can't explain the reasons nor will I even try other than to say we recognize how blessed we are. It is that very humility that will make him a fine officer no matter which direction he chooses.

Maybe one day you will find yourself as blessed as I am with smart, ambitious kids that you can be proud of privately and publicly. If a parent can't be publicly proud of their child even in an anonymous forum like this what has our world come to?

I am proud of all of these young men and women who have posted of such early successes. I am also proud of those who have chosen to serve our great country even someone as misguided as yourself.

Best of luck to you.

Did you really think this was necessary? Your kid made it into the USNA, congratulations. Does that give you the right to come off as condescending and arrogant. He "currently" is at USNA and you give him absolutely no respect, essentially thanking everyone who chose to serve, which obviously includes him, but you couldn't leave it at that and had to demean him in the process. I don't know how it works at USNA, but thats definitely not tolerated here. I hope your kid shows more respect than you or he'll probably have problems at the Naval Academy.

Everyone has the right to be condescending and arrogant. He's just stating the obvious. The squid's statements were misguided.

I'm not saying his statement wasn't misguided, because it definitely was, but he didn't say that. He called him misguided, which I feel is an unnecessary personal attack on someone that he had never actually come into contact with.

Grevar,

If DS chooses Navy, please let me know asap so I can put an offer in on the USCGA LOA for my DS before you try to sell it on ebay.

All kidding aside, congratulations to DS, you and your whole family. It's our children doing the work and making the real commitment, but we all share in their joy or comfort them in their pain when they receive this type of life changing news for better or worse.

What a great way for DS to go through Autumn of his senior year! Awesome.

You forget the poster initially said that the parent was "borderline obnoxious, not to mention all those smiley faces if you ask me and a lack of humility."

Yeah. He is likely misguided, as was his decision to call someone has hasn't come in contact with "obnoxious" and "lacking humility."

Would hate to my EER (or whatever Navy sailors call it) with this future officer signing off on it. "Petty Officer LITS... you talk about your accomplishments too much in your review of yourself... I'm going to knock you down a peg or two."

The only reason I didn't respond to the somewhat immaturity of his response to call him "obnoxious" and "lacking humility" is due to the fact that many people have already stressed the inappropriateness of his comment. I could have wrote a similar statement and just added how it was unnecessary to call him misguided, but than it would have been a partially redundant comment, and I personnally didn't want to just reiterate what others have been saying for the past day. It seems like everyone either agrees with the disparaging remark put forth by grevar or was just overlooking it(probably the latter), and I just didn't feel there was a need for that.

CADETorMID2018: congratulations on your LOA's.

I'm sure there are many 2018 candidates who are every bit as committed to serving as your DS, and who could qualify for an LOA but will not get one because there are only so many to go around. I think of another posters son who is now trying for the third time. There has been no LOA for him. Many will be so committed to serve, they will fund their own education and attempt to commission via OCS.

Please keep in mind that most of those who post or lurk here will likely see a "Qualified Not Selected" letter. They are going to wonder why because on paper they look every bit as, or more, qualified than many who get in - and in many cases they are. The admissions process will remain an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, surrounded by mystery (to paraphrase Churchill). I know that when my DS received the QNS Form Letter from the USNA, telling him to try again and work on improving his test scores and grades with challenging classes that the absurdity of that suggestion stung even though his first choice and dream had come through (he was a National Merit Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, 2200 SAT, over 4.x GPA, had multiple varsity letters and numerous EC's). The point is: many of those on this forum are as equally qualified as your son. So consider their feelings as you post.

Wow. This is eye opening and humbling. GoBlue1984 commented very positively on a USCGA thread I created where I was somewhat "whining" about my DS and his lack of an LOA.

I am now a firm believer that while "boasting" may be perceived by some as "obnoxious"....

Complaining, whining, griping, rationalizing, etc... about my own DS not receiving an LOA was pretty selfish, self-serving, inconsiderate and far more egregious than celebrating receipt of an LOA.

I realize now that there are far more deserving candidates than my own DS that will be overlooked in this process. We are honored and humbled just to be in the conversation and to be receiving consideration.

IMO, links to these forums should be one of the first things applicants and parents see when they visit the SA websites.

All,

These types of threads are perfectly appropriate for the forum. This is a community to discuss all aspects of the service academy admissions process, including the happy and the sad moments. There is no place here for denigrating someone because they're proud of their son or daughter.

Thank you for your time.

Sweet! Congrats! I got mine about 3 weeks ago...Now it's just a waiting game! Praying for a Nom now lol!

Dropped DS off yesterday for CVW. Head of admissions opened up the brief to the group. After going over what to shoot for and stressing a plan B, she called up the 6 recipients in the group who got a LOA to the stage for a public congratulations. I found that interesting in light of what has been said here. Out of approximately 125 DS/DD's in group, only about 10% had submitted their packet.

Is NOT getting invited to CVW a bad omen for admissions?

DS is not a candidate and did not apply to USNA, but he knows a classmate and fellow AFJROTC member that completed his application in the summer and was immediately called for his DODMERB exam.

I don't think that he has been invited to a CVW. Should he worry? Should my DS encourage him to request a CVW?

The problem with these forums is they are too damned informative. Now I know about something else to worry about and it's not even my own DS. Ugh....

FYI, on CVW thursday night 9/26 session, rough estimate of 100-150 candidates, the admissions director called up 3 persons which received a LOA. When we met with the admissions officer he said they focus on completed applicants with approximately upper 10 percent rating (however that is determined is still somewhat a mystery) and most candidates that receive an appointment in the future due not receive LOAs. His words were they want to get them early-LOAs, on a "hook" so they don't go else where.

My son did not get an invite to a CVW, but did get an LOA and is now in the class of 2017 at USNA, so no need to worry. If he can pay for a trip out there he should request a CVW just to get a little feel for life at the USNA.
