Eagle Scouts

I am excited to find out that recognition is given to the eagle and gold awards. As a scout of 12 years, the day I held my Gold Award in my hand, I felt I had accomplished something great. not just the massive service project needed to obtain the award or rank, but the 12 years I put my effort, and heart into scouting, and the realization I had advanced through the entire program and completed it with a project that embodied every skill I learned.

Scouting has taught me more than how to sell cookies, and nuts.. it has taught me leadership, communication skills, and most of all dedication. You get from scouting what you put into it, much the same as all colleges and service academies.

I think it's really wonderful that the S.A's recognize the commitment put into scouting. You wont find many scouts that have been involved since tiger cubs or daisies that will tell you they were just in it for points.

I feel if I attend a service academy, the skills I learned as a scout will assist me greatly.

My DS is also an Eagle Scout who was not accepted. He turned down admission to a very hard Univ. in our State to get into, a scholarship at another Univ. all so that he could enlist. He wanted the Navy and had stated to his B & G officer that he was fully aware of what he wanted. He got a 95 on his ASVAB testing. He will be in Bootcamp as an E-3 and then head to Monterey, CA for his CTI training for about a year. He has a 6 year commitment with the Navy. He will also have (or close to having) his associates degree after completing his CTI training in Linguistics.

So there are other routes beyond the Service Academy to accomplish his goals. His recruiter told him as soon as bootcamp is done that he should apply for OCS.

My son was a 2 Sport Varsity athlete, NHS - 3.8GPA, 7 years 4H experience, English was not his 1st language, Eagle Scout and so on.......

Maybe that explains why my DS received an unsolicited invitation to apply to USAFA??
