What is the Easter like at the Naval Academy in terms of mid schedules? Our family is Catholic - will my (2016) DS be able to attend Holy Thursday and/or Good Friday services, is there any special liberty given on Sunday, etc.? It did not appear on the calendars I viewed that there is any additional time off from class, e.g. Good Friday or Easter Monday (not that I expected it, but just thought I'd try to get the skinny here).
Thanks in advance!

As a general rule, if it's not spring break or a federal holiday, there is no time off on Good Friday or Easter Monday.

As for religious services, all midshipman are free to attend the religious service of their choice. The only exception would be if the mid was standing watch such that attendance was impossible. In my day, mids, including plebes, could even attend church services out in town provided they proceded directly to and from. Don't know if that's the case today.

Most, if not all, mids find that USNA provides many venues and opportunities to observe your religious activities, for those who choose to do so (and many do).

Dolphins2012,

According to the USNA calendar, there are services on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.

I doubt there is any extra liberty, but we can let the MIDN provide that answer.

As USNA1985 stated, as a plebe with a chit, it is permissible to attend services off the Yard on Sunday, BUT the liberty is ONLY to the church, through the service, and the return; it isn't time for a plebe to do anything else. Any upperclass would normally have liberty, so this would be a non-issue after plebe year.

If on duty, try to find another MIDN to switch watch/duty.

Dolphins, the USNA chaplains do a good job of making the various schedules known to the midshipmen, regardless of faith group. Your plebe will figure it all out.

Thanks, all. I have no doubt he'll figure it out when he gets there, of course, and I have every confidence that the staff of chaplains are great. I'm just curious as Easter is upon us this last year. As a parent of a senior, you start thinking this is your "last [fill in the blank]". While you know you'll see them for Thanksgiving and Christmas, it has occurred to us that we won't for Easter from here on out.

There is a Plebe Easter Egg hunt on the Yard though, right? :shake:

Upperclass, do you think you could help dolphins2012 plebe have an Easter Egg Hunt on the yard? I'm pretty sure y'all could get creative with plebe rates. :shake:

I think it should be part of a night manouvers exercise!

Spoke with our DS today. He said that they have the opportunity to attend tonight's mass, Good Friday services and Easter Sunday Mass. There is a Catholic Midshipmen's club that our DS has enjoyed being a part of this year. Your DS will have opportunities to get involved with the mass if he is involved now. There is also a midshipmen only mass most Sunday evenings. I remember seeing a picture of our DS coming out of mass during Plebe Summer with what I classified as a smile!:shake:

For what it's worth, the Academy actually hosts an Easter Egg Hunt on the Yard for locals/kids of officers, etc., that mids help out with. Or for dolphin's plebe, participate in.

Don't think there's any extra liberty this weekend. There are lots of services going on though.

All weekend eligible mids (including us plebers) were given uncharged overnights this weekend.

Attending Chruch

My Mid (a plebe) emailed me and said he had been able to go to Mass daily, attend Holy Thursday Mass, planned on Good Friday/Stations of the Cross, Easter Vigil and Easter Mass! He enjoys being part of the Catholic Midshipman Group and the choir. Apparently, surviving the Academy requires a lot of prayer! I don't recall him going to church that much at home. I was happy to hear that he could do this in the midst of exam week. (Guess he wanted some extra help for his chem test--LOL)
