Election Day

I think early voting strongly favors the democratic party but it's a feeling; I have no proof.

I love going to the polls and casting my ballot. I have never missed voting, even years ago when I was in labor!

I miss going to the Polls. in Washington it is 100% mail in ballots, no more official polling places though I think they have a couple places for people without an address to pick up a ballot.

We all get our ballots about 3+ weeks before the election, most have voted long before election day. Not long ago a person running for a state office was arrested a week before the election, because of the mail in ballots most people had already voted and the guy still won.

I liked the old system.

Admit it. You miss the bake sales.

voting

Listening to radio news this morning (AZ) an election official was reminding the reporter that it is illegal to offer "gifts", including food or discounts to people who voted. All election day discounts had to be offered to all...Not to say that people couldn't walk up to the entrance of a polling place (usually a church or school), grab a coffee or donut, and leave. I'm sure there would be some who drive around location to location, and do just that...
The ID thing here has been repeatedly challenged, pulled and re-worked, then challenged again. Not sure where it stands today...

My name went no where on the ballot. Without showing an ID, I'm not sure how they would have any idea if I could vote there.... or how many times I had voted... and there was no way to link my ballot to my name...

The whole Voter ID thing is pretty much a moot point in Washington now since we have a 100% mail in ballot system.

To get a ballot you have to register to vote, the form asks name, address, and you have to include your drivers license number, if you don't have a drivers license then you include your Social Security number. Once your registered you will receive your ballot in the mail every election.

The interesting thing is that your name is not printed on the ballot. When you complete the ballot you put it in the enclosed envelope and there is a spot on the envelope for you to sign. The ballot states that if you don't sign your vote "May" not be counted. I guess they only count them if the election is real close, at least that's the common thought out here.

The biggest issue I have with the mail in ballot is that there is no control over who actually votes. I could simply fill out my son's ballots and send them in....we don't, but we could. A couple years ago there was a group that went around and took the ballots out of hundreds of mail boxes, nobody knows if those ballots were ever filled out and sent in.

At least with the mail in ballot nobody here has to worry about the whole ID thing, if your not registered, you don't get a ballot.

Still miss the cookies though, and yes the coffee and cookies were outside of the official polling place so I guess that's how they got around the regulations.

WOW! We were just discussing this. I thought it was illegal also. In our area, they identify you via a signature card only. No ID.

It depends on the state. There is no such thing as a federal election. There are 50 state elections. Voter ID laws have been challenged in some states. So far it's made it through the Supreme Court fine. It's now being challenged in states that are/were covered under the Voting Rights Act. Time will tell.

BTW I can't speak to the specific laws in Conn.

Things you have to have an issued ID for...

* Buying a single beer
* Staying in a hotel room
* Renting a carpet cleaning machine
* Cashing a $30 check

Things you don't have to have an issued ID for...

* Choosing the next leader of the free world
* Bringing a child into the world

If I were a cynical man, I might think there is something wrong with this picture.

Perhaps we need to bring back the American exceptionalism debate.

Not sure if the United States is either really free or leading in what

Is voting alone enough to fulfill our civic duties?

I think I didn't vote once or twice after I turned 18. I like to think I am an informed voter and make my choices based on what I think is best for my area and the country.

It seems my votes didn't change anything!

Perhaps I need to take this posting back. MD electing a Republican governor qualifies as a "change."

I have to say Hogan had the best ads. Two words that will send every voter to the polls in MD....RAIN TAX!

The one that is surprising to me is VA. I really thought Gillespie had no chance in Hades of making it this close of a race. I know Warner has declared victory, but Gillespie has yet to concede. 12k votes separate them and 95% of votes have been counted. If I was Warner I would take this as a clear sign of revolt/referendum because at one time he had a 20% lead. I say Warner because I believe in the end he will be returning to the Senate.

Still here in my district in Connecticut we have to provide a State or Federal Photo ID to vote. I thought that was illegal although never challenged.

Someone is pulling a fast one. My wife works as a Checker or Moderator at the polls every year and says all that's needed is proof that you are in the correct voting district. See HERE

Yesterday she had a handfull of folks show up without ID. They were directed to a separate area where they signed that they are who they say they are and they live where they say they live. Their names are flagged and they have to show ID at the next election.

On a more general note: when only around 50% vote - what does that say about our democracy?

Couple really shocking things this election:

MIA LOVE out of Utah's 4th district: black, female...

MD governor REPUBLICAN! I just saw a pig fly!

Kay HAGAN: OUT! I have a snowball still going in hell.

And of course, in Pennsylvania, we've elected a guy who said he's all for more taxes, including big taxes on the booming oil & gas industry. That's just what we need here. More taxes on the only good thing we've got going (besides Steeler football).

LMAO fencer those were classic responses. OBTW, I do agree pigs flew, but I think they flew for Joni Ernst....did you hear her election speech....she is going to make them sqeual in DC!

Now with that all said. I really do believe if the Republicans are smart they better not act like spoiled brats and believe this was a vote for Republicans. It was a referendum on anti incumbent IMPO and to get rid of Reid.

Screw it up and in two years itcould swing right back for them regarding both houses!

I wonder how Landrieu can say with a straight face she looks forward to the run off. 60% of voters went for someone else and had Rob Mariness (R) had not been on the ballot. Bill Cassidy probably have won last night. Who does she think those Mariness voters are going to vote for in Dec. That election is really going to be about getting out the vote.

In the end it probably will be 54 R to 46 D.

This election will now go down in the books as the largest loss for a midterm election regarding a sitting president in over fifty years

PIMA, I kept thinking about 1994 and 2006 - both big landslides (in opposite directions) and I totally agree: more of a "throw the bums out!" than, "Oh yes! We WANT republicans!"

Ernst is gonna have them looking for new panties in DC!

My parents on the Eastern Shore of Maryland hope the election will bring the People's Republic of Maryland back in line with the Eastern Shore.... tall order.

In other news.... no one I voted for in VA won (or have been announced....) but I do vote in Fairfax County.

LITS, you can come and join my party. No one I voted for won either (even my husband whom I wrote in for town council).

There was an interesting video circulating social media in my state yesterday. A state Supreme Court associate justice was in line to vote when a poll worker asked him for his ID. He kindly replied that the request was a violation of his constitutional right. The poll worker replied that he was welcome to refuse, he was just required by law to ask. Funny thing the poll worker didn't know was that the guy he was quizzing for ID wrote the opinion in the decision to strike down a voter ID requirement. I voted early a few weeks ago and honestly don't remember if I was even asked or not.

Another interesting fact from yesterday's election. Senator-elect Tom Cotton (R-AR) is now the first Iraq war combat veteran elected to the U.S Senate.

LITS,

Seriously you though that anyone in your county with the letter D behind it wasn't going to win?

You know if they changed the shape of the district, more to the west and not down the I95 corridor(east side of the corridor) Connolly would be gone. The tenth has an R.

It really is interesting to see how these maps are drawn. I have not a clue why I am in the 11th, yet drive 5-10 miles at most in any direction and they are all in the 10th!
~ I live in Nokesville VA....35 miles from Fairfax! 15 + miles from Dumfries!

Oh yeah, I remember now...it is called gerrymandering!
