End of another year

DS is wrapping up a very successful MSII year this week. His Ranger team won their Bde. Competition and competed at Sandhurst. Although they didn't place as higlhy overall as they hoped, it was a tremendous learning opportunity for them. They did manage a top 5 on a couple events, and felt good about their performance.

He was awarded Superior Cadet and the Physical Proficiency (342 pt score) awards for the second year in a row.

He got back from Sandhurst 1 week ago and is now in full-on CDQC preparation mode. He leaves in less than two weeks.

He doesn't yet know what position he will hold in the Bn. next fall, but has been named Ranger Co. Commander for 2013-14.

Busy + fun times ahead! Good luck and be safe to everyone and their respective DDs and DSs as they embark on their summer adventures.

Freshman Year

DD did not have quite the year as everyone else. She did manage to confirm that she does like her school and program and that she is willing to tolerate the bull (her words) at the unit to get to her final goal of being a Navy nurse. She struggled first semester with PT but was not on remedial the second semester and improved in all three areas that are graded. She is doing summer school and will end up graduating a semester early. The transition from high school (home) to college was tougher for her than I expected she was homesick bad for the first six weeks which we didn’t expect. She made the Dean’s list both semesters but also made the first B of her life which appeared to bother her as bad as the homesickness. Coming from a small town school to a university it was the first time she was not the smartest kid in class and was sometimes the one holding up others while she asked one more question. But she is proud to wear the uniform and her Mom and I could not be prouder.

Mingram - it sounds to me like she had a great year! One of the most important parts of college is learning to navigate new surroundings and expectations. Sounds like she did a first rate job of that.

Also, as a nursing student, academics are the #1 priority. Dean's List both semesters? She had a successful year and should be proud of herself!

Sent you a pm on an unrelated subject!

Ditto that for DS (homesickness and no longer the smartest kid in class), though PT was decent for him. He received about 1/2 B's (did not get a single B in high school, AP or dual enrollment), which he took in stride. He did well enough in some classes to tutor other MIDN's. Do what you can to help your DS realize this is a tough program, she did well in classes and made progress on PT. All personal successes; it can be hard to adjust expectations of ourselves. There is so much change in that 1st year. My best to you and her.

I'd say she did pretty damned well as a MIDN 4/C. The transition to college is never easy. Dean's List each semester is quite an accomplishment while doing NROTC and an important milestone with the Battalion as well. There's got to be a ribbon there! Getting off remedial PT is another milestone I'm sure she was glad she hit! Good luck to her! :thumb:
