I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share what the essay topics were in past years on the second step application.

I had to write one on the values important in an officer, and one on why I felt I would make a good officer.

^^^those two, plus an essay about why you would work well in a diverse environment.

How much do they vary from year to year? I can imagine that the two about being an officer are pretty much permanent, but what about the diversity one?

Also, what is the word count?

You will write three essays, each with a set word cap (can't remember how many). But the prompts mentioned above are exactly the same ones I had a year ago. Just give honest, well drafted answers that show your motivation and ability as a writer.

Good luck

I doubt they do. Also it's a 2500 character count.

I have a question on my nomination essay. The prompt says for the essay to be 500 words or less, but I have just finished and I am at 530 words. I know that for a normal college, this would usually be acceptable, but the academies are not normal colleges. They are colleges that require you to follow orders or in this case directions. This being said, do you guys thinks 30 words over the limit will be acceptable? I have been over it about 20 times and cannot find anything to cut out.

Follow instructions. Look at it some more. Something can be cut.

User America's Finest has an excellent tagline on this topic:

"There are 52 words in the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States, 179 words in the Ten Commandments, and 286 words in the Gettysburg Address. If you have a point to make and it takes you longer to articulate than one or all of the previously stated rhetoric, I generally stop listening."

I had to do open-heart surgeries to get my essays to fit into the allowed limit. Maybe there really isn't anything you can cut out. Try rephrasing. If that doesn't help... well, you might have to leave out the least important points.

Good luck!
