Hi,

If you have already earned merit-based (meaning the money will be awarded to you, not based on financial need) scholarships, will that money be forfeited upon enrollment at the Academy? Or is there an office there that handles the distribution of that money to you like a normal university?

I'm just curious at this point. Thank you.

Depends on the scholarship. My roommate gets an extra bit of cash every month from a scholarship she got her senior year of high school. When you get here you'll just work with finance if you can keep the money.

I got some scholarships before I came here and they went directly to help pay off the loan that you take on for all the stuff you're issued. None of it actually goes directly into your pocket. The only catch for scholarships is that they need to be non-restrictive, so they can't say you have to maintain a certain GPA or use the money for books.

My kids were newspaper carriers every day for 5 years and were awarded considerable monies based on that work. They each got a lump sum at the end of each academic year and were permitted to keep the money and do with it whatever they pleased. One year, one bought boots; another year, the money went toward plane tickets to see the girlfriend.

It depends on the stipulations of your scholarship (some have grades attached; mine had to maintain a 2.5 gpa I think) and whatever USAFA decides.
