One of my friends just told me that they recieved an appointment to the Naval Academy in the mail today. I was under the assumption that all decisions had already been sent out. Also my friend never recieved a nomination. How is this possible?

Superintendent or Vice Presidential nomination, possibly.

Perhaps he was on the waitlist? Perhaps some magic happened?

Someone on the waiting list could still receive an appointment offer. EVERYONE who is offered an appointment must be 3Q AND have a NOM from one of the available sources. Appointments don't just fall out of the sky.

I know for a fact that they were not on the waiting list and that they recieved a nomination of no kind. There was no vp nom, presidential nom, or congressional nom. That's why I'm so confused

Or as mentioned previously they could have received a Superintendent nomination which you can not directly apply for but the Academy can use to offer appointments.

I was thinking superintendent nom but those are mainly reserved for people who got a letter of assurance and not a nom. Even then, this year has been the most competitive so you would think there would only be one or two of those

WOW! Hope that person wants the appointment. There are A LOT of Wait Listed candidates still stalking the mail boxes...I know my daughter still is filled with hope mixed with disappointment....Hope it happens for her, and GOOD LUCK to your friend.

    lol he's just lying

some 1000 or so were sent out by march, and the rest were sparsely in between after that

and without a nomination, it's impossible

Although not mentioned in the USNA catalog online, I believe the Superintendent has about 50 nominations which he can use at his discretion for a variety of different candidates from different sources. These can't be applied for. From an article by the Naval Academy Alumni Association in 2009, the number was 50, which is the number I have heard over the years.

Though by now the majority of the class of 2016 will be set, there is fluidity around the edges as appointees get injured, turn down appointments after originally accepting, or decisions get made to adjust class size, etc. Small incremental adjustments may well be made up to a very short window prior to I-Day.

As a boss of mine used to say, "if it didn't come down with Moses from the mountaintop carved on a tablet, nothing is written in stone."

Agree Captmj. The poster wrote that they know for a fact that the individual didn't receive any traditional nominations and was not on a wait list.

Well, there are only 2 actual facts.

    1. You CAN'T get an appointment without a nomination. It could have been a Superintendent's. But you MUST have a nomination.

    2. Every qualified candidate who didn't receive an appointment is technically on a wait list. It may not be the "Official Letter/online-status" wait list that most people see; but that doesn't mean they weren't on a wait list.

Example: A qualified individual could be #210 on the national wait list which is virtually impossible to receive an appointment with because you don't get that many turning down their appointments at that stage of the process. HOWEVER: that same person who was #210 nationally, could have been #2 or #3 from their MOC's slate. And if the #1 declined the appointment or was deemed unqualified, this individual could receive the appointment to fill the MOC's slate. Even though nationally, their standing is much less.

But in this thread, the individual is stating that they know for a fact that the friend did not receive a nomination of any kind. If this is true, then it sounds like they were still on a wait list; similar to an LOA; but needing a nomination. There's no way the individual writing would know if the academy gave the individual in question a VP or Superintendent nomination until it happened. Which could have been at the same time as the appointment.

Of course, the other explanation that the individual in question is blowing smoke some place and didn't receive an appointment.

Congrats to you Tallgator. Hope to meet you in the clas of 2016. Still wait listed and stalking the mail box along with parents. Good luck to you...Still HOPEFUL for Class of 2016...as far as "confused"...the post seems rather vague and hard to believe.

Yanking Your Chain. No nomination from any source no Admittance. Super Appointments are few and far between but it is my understanding that He/She may select a certain number submitted through traditional Congressional nominations and not appointed in the first rounds. They can be selected on a Superintend Admittance. No Nomination, No Consideration.
