Hello! A friend mentioned something about there being a "fee" due on I day for the computer that they will be issued. My DS has a perfectly good Mac....any insight would be appreciated.

Nothing due at all. They get a no interest "loan" that covers all issued gear including computers that is paid back from their pay over the next few years. No need to bring his own computer either.

This is new. Four years ago DS did not have a fee for anything. Computers were issued. We showed up with broken in running shoes and an extra set of paperwork related to immunizations in case USNA misplaced them. Any "fees" such as for laundry are taken out of their "pay" and the remaining money ends up to be about $100.00 per month.

The confusion might be coming from the USMA requires $2000 before R day for such items. I am not sure why they do and USNA and USAFA do not.

Yes, USMA and USNA do other things differently as well. I remember we had to buy DS his boots and low quarters for West Point but when he ended up going Navy after a late BFE offer, he did not need to buy his military shoes prior to coming to the academy.

I think someone has mixed up the order of events. Plebes are issued PC's at the END of plebe summer, not on I-day. They won't have any access to computers prior to that time. The PTR package will provide specific details about what is recommended/required to be brought with you as those requirements can change from year to year. You can also search back on prior posts on PC topics. You can't connect your own PC to the USNA network (as is also true in most private sector businesses), due to security restrictions and since the front-end logon software is unique to each network.
