one of the questions on the USNA app asks:

have you received or are you currently receiving federal funding or financial assistance for a demonstrated family hardship?

I am currently receiving federal financial aid loans for college. Also, my mother was on unemployment for several months about a year ago. Do either of these belong in this section?

Keep in mind that every college student - regardless of income - may receive a federal student loan. This is not in and of itself indicative of hardship.

I would interpret it as receiving food stamps, free or reduced lunch or if you received a Pell grant for college. These are need based programs dependent on one's income (or lack thereof).
